Another Filipino sharing the colors of Kuwait, Allen Cuartero overcame Chan Keng Kwang of Singapore 9-7 while Olver Medenilla, sporting the UAE colors upset fancied Jeong Young Hwa of Korea 9-6. Israel Rota of the Philippines who is representing host nation Qatar stunned defending World Pool Champion Daryl Peach of Britain in a pulsating match, 9-8 while youthful Lee Van Corteza, the US Open champion routed Syria?s Al Khadar 9-1 in a first round match. Later in the day former World 9 Ball Champion and 8 ? Ball king Ronnie Alcano breezed to a 9-1 win over a hapless Ahmed Hassan, Venancio Tanio beat Holger Gries of Germany 9-54, Antonio ?Nikoy? Lining eased past American Corey Deuel 9-7 and Antonio ?Ga Ga? Gabica tripped Nicolas Ottermann of Germany also by a 9-7 margin.
