MILAN REVEALS NATIONAL WORLD SERIES OF BOXING SQUAD

PhilBoxing.com

Lausanne, SWITZERLAND, June 15, 2010 -- The Milan World Series of Boxing (WSB) franchise is proud to announce the recruitment of some of Italy?s best boxers for the national contingent of its team.

The Milan team will boast the winner of AIBA's 2009 Best Boxer Award, Domenico Valentino. The 26 year-old from Marcianise scooped up the award after taking the 2009 AIBA World Championship (60kg) title in front of the home crowd in Milan, adding it to the silver medal he won at the 2007 AIBA World Championships. Valentino is also expected to be a success outside the ring and has recently been appointed an Athlete Role Model for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Singapore where he can become an admired icon for the next generation of boxers.

Olympic silver medalist and 2009 Mediterranean Games gold medalist, Clemente Russo, will also join the Milan team in the super heavyweight category. The 28 year-old Campania-native is a policeman by trade and became a celebrity in Italy after appearing in the "Reality House" reality TV show, the country's version of the popular "Big Brother" format.

Paolo Taveggia, CEO of the Milan franchise comments: ?The franchise is delighted to announce such high quality boxers whose track records speak for themselves. We see the Milan franchise as a real contender to win the inaugural series of WSB. It is certainly a mouth watering prospect for Italian boxing fans.?

Further boxers named include;

Luca Podda

The national champion will compete in the 73kg middle weight WSB division for the Milan team. The 23 year old made the semifinals of last year's Mediterranean Games and narrowly missed out on the Elite Eight at the 2009 World Amateur Championships, losing a close 7:6 battle to Canada?s Steve Rolls.

Vittorio Parrinello

The Milan franchise?s bantamweight contender will be the local 54kg boxer. He started off the 2010 European Championships with a big win, but unfortunately couldn?t carry the momentum through to the later rounds. At the 2009 Italian National Championships, he out-boxed the competition and was crowed Italy?s best 54kg fighter, following his 11:2 thrashing of Luigi Allegrini in the finals.

Vincenzo Picardi

He has performed superbly in the last few years for his homeland and looks to continue his hot streak. Picardi made the semifinals of both the 2007 World Championships and the 2009 Mediterranean Games. He was also the flyweight bronze medalist in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. On June 11, Picardi made it through to the semifinal round of the 2010 European Championships in Moscow, Russia, but came up a little short, falling to hometown hero Misha Aloyan of Russia.

Ivano Del Monte

Del Monte has moved up divisions since being defeated by WSB contender Carlos G?ngora from Ecuador in the preliminary round of the 2007 AIBA World Championships in Chicago at 75kg.The 25 year-old will be competing in the light heavyweight WSB division at 85kg.

Ivan Khodabakhsh, Chief Operating Officer of the World Series of Boxing, said: ?The selection of the national boxers for the Milan franchise proves the quality of elite boxers participating in World Series of Boxing. The European conference is already shaping up to be exceptionally strong for our first year of competition?.
