MAIDANA DESTROYS UNDEFEATED CAYO

PhilBoxing.com

WBA-interim junior welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KOs) knocked out previously undefeated Victor Cayo (24-1, 16 KOS) in six rounds of a slam-bang bout at the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The southpaw from Argentina who won the interim title with a stunning demolition of Golden Boy Promotions highly-touted Victor Ortiz exchange some big shots with Cayo and caught him at the end of round two and dropped him for the first time in his career.

The third and fourth rounds were action-packed as both fighters threw caution to the winds and engaged in a furious slugfest which carried through round five with first Maidana and then Cayo appearing to have the upper-hand.

In the sixth round Maidana who sparred extensively with hard-hitting Filipino southpaw Mark Jason Melligen in Las Vegas for the Ortiz and praised Melligen for his help in a post-fight interview nailed Cayo with vicious rights and lefts before dropping Cayco for the full count with a wicked body shot

In another one of the many irregularities apparently condoned by the IBF Joan Guzman (30-0, 17 KOs) won a very close split decision over Ali ?Rush Hour? Funeka (30-3-3, 25 KOs) of South Africa in a rematch of last year's robbery when the judges scored the fight a draw after Funeka clearly dominated Guzman most of the rounds.

This time around the scores were 114-113 for Funeka, 114-113 for Guzman and 116-111 for Guzman.

Despite the win Guzman won?t get the IBF lightweight title because he came in at a ridiculous nine pounds over the 135 pound limit at the official weigh-in while Funeka made the weight. But in an effort to save the day for Golden Boy Promotions the two sides, with the blessing of the IBF, decided to have an unofficial weigh-in on the day of the fight, the second in 24 hours which is something not in the rules of the different world organizations.

Boxingscene.com reported that Guzman who weighed in at almost two divisions above the lightweight limit in the official weigh-in on the eve of the title fight was allowed to weigh in on the morning of the fight along with Funeka with Guzman being limited to 150 pounds at most and Funeka having to weigh-in no more than 145 pounds which again gave the Golden Boy fighter a weight advantage.

In the second weigh-in Guzman tipped the scales at 148.2-pounds and Funeka was 143.2 which meant that Guzman enjoyed a five pound advantage

Guzman will be penalized by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for his inability to make weight [said to be 25% of his purse]. Funeka will receive between $20-25,000 additional for moving forward with the contest.
