On a Collision Course -The Hurricane and Bad News Fight Breakdown

PhilBoxing.com

When it comes to women?s boxing, it doesn?t get much better than this when veteran road warrior Lisa ?Bad News? Brown (16-4-3, 5KO) meets the surging Ana ?The Hurricane? Julaton (6-1-1, 1KO) today at Casino Rama, Orillia, Canada. This championship match up at Rumble at Rama XI for the vacant WBA Women?s Super Bantamweight World Title is considered the to be pinnacle of women?s boxing this year thus far.

Philboxing breaks down each boxers styles and qualities to highlight their strengths in the ring to identify who has the advantage over the other. In recent interviews with both Lisa Brown and Ana Julaton, including the members of their team along with local boxing experts and members of the media, we have broken down their boxing styles for a head to head showdown and comparison.

Who?s the Hometown Favorite?

Lisa Brown is used to fighting on the road and considers herself the underdog. As a veteran of 23 fights, Lisa and is not intimidated with how the crowd plays out or who favors who. However, this is Lisa Brown?s territory, she is well known and respected up here by the boxing community and by her fans who adore her. Expect them in attendance and there are many.

On the other hand, Ana Julaton?s overall popularity is ever increasing inside and outside the ring . With only 8 Pro fights, the media demand for her time justifies that she has crossed over as she continues to win the admiration of Filipinos and boxing fans in Toronto just like south of the border.

The hometown advantage may be neutralized if the Filipinos show up by the thousands and represent. Otherwise Lisa will have the home crowd advantage fighting at home.

Ring Generalship

When you're up against a veteran boxer like Lisa Brown, expect that she will make any necessary adjustments with her footwork and timing with how she moves in the ring to her advantage. Lisa has got it down pat, she knows when to advance and cut the ring since she is a natural boxer/puncher who moves in and out at her command.

According to Ana, she has learned to use her footwork to get close and inside by using timing and trapping from Freddie Roach. Nonito Donaire Sr. has taught her to increase her coverage in the ring. Ana is ready to get inside or create space, whatever calls for the moment.

Advantage: Ana?s ring generalship will make use of the whole ring.

Defense & Durability

Lisa Brown has fought the best and has never been stopped in 23 pro fights. Lisa has a hands up and slipping defense that will be very quick and fluid. In those 23 fights, Lisa has taken many big punches and proved she?s got a world class chin. Many boxing experts praise Lisa?s durability as one of her greatest strengths which is why she has won many decisions.

Ana Julaton with 8 pro fights under her belt has fought all tough fighters including power puncher Dominga Olivo where Ana lost to a split decision. Freddie Roach has taught her the inside game, blocking and the bob and weave. Rick Noble has taught Ana to move side to side and Nonito Donaire Sr. has taught her to create space in creating distance to take advantage of her reach.

Advantage: Lisa Brown has been in more tough fights in her career, her defense and durability may be the key in winning this fight.

Conditioning

Lisa Brown understands that she is up against a younger and aggressive boxer and has worked extremely hard in training for this fight. She is in top condition. She does not have any injuries coming into this fight. Due to her conditioning, she has proved that she is one of the strongest and most durable up and coming woman boxer at 122 lbs. These are her best assets and have gone the distance many times in her career, mostly in her favor. Lisa has sparred about 100 rounds for her fight with Ana.

Ana has worked with a variety of boxing coaches and boxers that has influenced the way she trains and conditions. Her time training with Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao has inspired her to work as hard and be as disciplined in training like the pound for pound king. Previously, she also trained and sparred with Rodel Mayol and Gerry Penalosa. For this fight, Ana sparred with Glenn Donaire, son of Coach Nonito Sr. for over 80 rounds. She has no injuries coming into this fight. Ana also practises Martial Arts, the physical and mental conditioning from it, in addition to being a boxer will have it?s positive influence.

Advantage: Ana overall training and discipline from boxing and martial arts brings the best of both worlds together. Will Lisa?s 10yr age difference show?

Coaching

The discipline, dedication, worth ethic and bond between Husband/Coach Errol and Lisa Brown is admirable, who else would know each other at best. They have been together for a long time and have gone a long way. The second man in the corner is Richard Lewis, trainer/conditioner who has been in the sport for decades. Since Errol and Richard were both former boxers, there is no shortage of talent in Lisa?s corner as her success speaks for itself.

Ana utilizes all the best boxing methods and practices from her past coach Freddie Roach and currently with Nonito Donaire Sr. Coach Rick Noble taught Ana how go acquire points as proven when he coached Ana to her second world title last December. Ana?s strength and conditioning coach Lauro Dorolia has increased Ana?s muscle strength and definition so that she is in top form when Ana meets Lisa Brown.

Advantage: Ana Julaton, can?t go wrong with Coaches Roach, Donaire Sr. and Noble

Offense

Lisa Brown will pressure and dig down deep when its needed with her strong deliberated punches. Her perseverance is what Champions are made of. She is consistent in her attack, a busy fighter that is always punching and her punches are swift and fast as can be. Lisa will be relentless in her pursuit with a take no prisoner attitude. As the smaller fighter, Lisa will surely make her way on the inside where she will capitalize.

Ana will create her offense tailor suited to what Lisa Brown will bring to her. Expect Ana to have combinations ready to launch and counter. She will utilize her range and power as she has a well balanced power to speed ratio with her punches. You will see a mesh of styles in the past from Freddie Roach and Nonito Donaire Sr?s signature qualities in a boxer. Ana is regarded as one of the hardest hitters in the 122 lb division with a great jab and is known attacking the body early to break down her opponent. Ana will be very dangerous for any opponent if they choose to brawl and go toe to toe.

Advantage: Tie - Lisa Brown is a proven boxer. Ana is still learning but will have the better reach and can brawl better toe to toe.

In closing, you have a Champion vs. Champion, Lisa ?Bad News? Brown with a proven chin, defense and offense. Ana ?The Hurricane? Julaton is younger, has better coaching, conditioning and knows how to use the space in the ring to her advantage.

So who will win? I?m calling it a split draw and if this fight lives up to it?s billing, then it has to be settled with a rematch.
