CASIMIRO GETS TITLE SHOT AT IVAN CALDERON
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 03 Mar 2010

Undefeated WBO interim light flyweight champion Johnreil “Quadro Alas” Casimiro of the Philippines is next in line to try and take the title away from undefeated Puerto Rican champion Ivan Calderon.
Casimiro who has a record of 14-0 with 8 knockouts earned the title shot after an impressive 11th round knockout over hard-hitting and heavily fancied former world champion Cesar Canchila of Colombia.
Upon his arrival in Manila on Christmas eve, Casimiro said he wanted the 34 year old Calderon who is undefeated with a record if 34-1 with 6 knockouts.
Despite facing a strong opponent with well-known punching power and stamina, Casimiro dropped Canchila no less that five times before the referee decided it was all over after Casimiro dropped Canchila for a second time in the eleventh round.
The reported purse bid scheduled for March 2 did not take place as Calderon’s promoter PR Best Boxing and international matchmaker and promoter Sampson Lewkowicz who handles Casimiro along with Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani apparently reached agreement to stage the fight in Puerto Rico in late May although Casimiro told us earlier he was hoping the fight could be staged in the Philippines.
Calderon defeated current WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol by a six round technical decision in Puerto Rico in a rematch after their first meeting at Madison Square Garden ended in a somewhat controversial draw with many ringsiders of the opinion that Mayol should have got the decision. Both fights were cut short because Calderon suffered a cut on his forehead due to an accidental clash of heads.
It was only last Sunday that Marvin Sonsona, the former WBO super flyweight champion was matched against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr in a WBO super bantamweight title fight in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and got knocked out in the fourth round raising the same concerns over whether a Casimiro-Calderon title fight would be a mismatch.
However, Calderon unlike Vazquez Jr is not a heavy puncher while Casimiro is both aggressive and courageous.
