SONSONA FIVE POUNDS OVERWEIGHT WITH TEN DAYS TO GO

PhilBoxing.com

“Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona was five pounds over the 122 pound limit with ten days to go to his super bantamweight title fight against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on February 27.

Filipino promoter Sammy G ello-ani informed insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that Sonsona weighed 127 pounds after a well-received media workout in Puerto Rico, one day after their arrival from Las Vegas where they watched the “Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13” fight card at the Las Vegas Hilton last Saturday.

In a battle of undefeated fighters Sonsona is clearly much better off in terms of his weight compared to stablemate Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales who had to shed off 12 pounds in six days to make the 118 pound limit in his bantamweight title fight against champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel of Mexico.

Morales paid the price by being knocked out in the first round after Montiel nailed him with a vicious shot to the mid-section, prompting Morales to tell us the next morning that his stomach still ached.

Sonsona, the former WBO super flyweight champion is looking for his second world title in less than six months after having won the super flyweight title with a rousing twelve round unanimous decision over Jose “Carita” Lopez of Puerto Rico last September at Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada and losing the title when he failed to make the weight in November in hia first title defense.

Sonsona who decided to move up two weight divisions told us he expects a “very competitive fight” when he meets undefeated Vazquez Jr for the WBO super bantamweight title relinquished by Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez who moved up to featherweight and won the title with a battering of Steven Luevano.

The 12 round bout presented by PR Best Boxing Promotions in association with All Star Boxing, Sampson Boxing LLC and SGG Sports Promotions and dubbed as "Making History" will be the first world title boxing match to be held in Puerto Rico for 2010.

Promoter Juan Rivera, president of PR Best Boxing Promotions said “ We are starting 2010 with a big pay per view card which will have "Papito" (Vasquez Jr.) in his first world title shot against Marvin Sonsona, who many people in Puerto Rico know because he won the 115 lbs. title from Jose "Carita" Lopez last Sept. 2009.

Rivera said the event “pits two undefeated fighters, two of the top prospects in boxing for the title vacated by Juanma Lopez to move up in weight.”

Although Sonsona said it would be a competitive fight, he predicted “hopefully I will win by knockout.”

Gello-ani said Sonsona is now back in San Francisco and training hard under the watchful eye of Nonito Donaire Sr at the Kennel Boxing Gym in San Leandro, California.
