Mission Impossible is Possible at the Kennel Gym By Rob Cruz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 11 Feb 2010 Achieving the impossible is the mission at the Kennel Boxing Gym for Marvin Sonsona and Ciso Morales. The sweet science is broken down in daily bits and pieces by head coach Nonito Donaire Sr. along with his nephew and Kennel Gym coach Arvin Jugarap who are getting the two ready for their championship match up on two separate events. The two undefeated boxers have an extensive daily routine starting with a 5km morning run along with a strength and conditioning workout. At 4pm, they have another workout with the coaches working the mitts, heavy bags and sparring sessions. Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales (14-0, 8KO) challenges WBO Bantamweight Champion Fernando Montiel (39-2-2, 29KO) this Saturday at Top Rank’s Latin Fury/Pinoy Power event. Marvin Sonsona (14-0-1,12KO) battles for the vacant Junior Featherweight WBO World Titile against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr (17-0-1, 12KO) in the Making History pay per view event from Bayamon PR on February 27. Coach Nonito Donaire Sr. and Arvin’s update on Ciso Morales. Ciso started sparring seven rounds right away with much bigger opponents who outweigh him by at least 20-30lbs. He has been successfully sparring 12 round sessions and have sparred approximately 50 rounds as of last week. He is 100% ready and focused for his match up against veteran Fernando Montiel. Ciso is on target for the weight is successfully cutting weight by working and sweating it out oppose to reducing his food consumption. On his previous fight at Casino Rama, Canada, Ciso only had 3 weeks training under Coach Nonito Sr., now that he’s been training under Coach Nonito Sr. for several months, he has evolved into a more complete boxer and counter puncher. Expect a refined Ciso with solid crisp punches counter combinations. Coach Nonito Sr. states that Ciso will be ready to defend against Montiel’s fluid attacks by keeping his hands up and will be ready with counter punches. Ciso is in tremendous physical condition and is in optimum performance in the ring. He confident that Ciso is the bigger and stronger boxer who has the physical advantage and they regard Fernando Montiel as an average boxer. Nonito Sr. is familiar with Montiel’s style of boxing and his movement in the ring and comments that Montiel doesn’t have the dangerous one punch knock out power . They are predicting to shock the world with a stoppage or going the distance against Montiel. Coach Nonito Donaire Sr. and Arvin’s update on Marvin Sonsona. Due to Promoter Sammi Gello-Ani’s extremely hard work and perseverance, Team Sonsona feels very fortunate that Marvin has the opportunity to fight for another world title especially when there has been many boxers who has been in the sport a lot longer than him who are still waiting for the same opportunity. Marvin will be a lot more comfortable at 122 lbs division which is a more natural weight for him, he doesn’t have to starve and dehydrate himself to the point of putting himself in danger to make weight. He hasn’t gained a lot of weight since his previous fight and expect to see a much faster and stronger puncher this time around. Having a 3 fight schedule within 6 months, the one month break in between fights has been enough rest to recharge Marvin according to Coach Nonito Sr. The left hand injury Marvin suffered on his previous fight will be a non-factor since it was only a bruise. He has sparred approximately 24 rounds as of last week and will continue to reach his peak closer to the fight date. While in Puerto Rico, Marvin was surprised to discover that his opponent was smaller than he expected and he is not at all intimidated to be the underdog or to be fighting in front of his opponent’s hometown. Wilfredo Vazquez’s Jr’s in your face tactics had no effect on Marvin according to Coach Nonito Sr. During the press conference. Marvin didn’t get caught up his opponent’s in your face attitude but felt giving the irritating Vazquez Jr. a slap in the face. Coach Nonito is currently developing Marvin’s punch connect ratios and defence, he explained that in previous fights, Marvin likes to test out his opponents which is why he let’s himself get hit as much and he will more defensive this time around. Having studied Wilfredo Vazquez Jr’s fights, Coach Nonito Sr. commented that Wilfredo is a strong and tough opponent but lacks speed. Marvin will be ready with many strategies and will capitalize with counter punching against Vazquez Jr. Marvin considers his opponent Vasquez Jr. as nothing special of a boxer. Their plan with Vazquez Jr. is to take him to deep into the rounds exhaust him and knock him out or surprise him with an early knock out that Marvin is known for.
