Remembering King Louie: Time For Luisito Espinosa To Get Paid By Oliver Suarez PhilBoxing.com Sun, 07 Feb 2010 The sudden emergence of Pacquiao as one of boxing’s superstars has made it possible for many Pinoy boxers to display their skills at the world stage and made promoters notice the power of the Filipino market. Now Philippines, has multiple world champions and the best may yet to come as numerous talented prospects are still waiting in the wings. As a result many Filipinos are now following the sport of boxing and support their fellow Pinoy boxers religiously. Filipinos have always been fond of boxing, but it can be argued that they have never followed the sport in such a manner as today. People around the world can attest to that. They flood the internet with comments to such a magnitude that many boxing sites and writers have started catering to them by covering Pinoy boxers and Pacquiao as much as possible. But Pinoy fans and boxers must remember those who paved the way. The fighters that kept boxing alive in the Philippines in a time where few Pinoy boxers got opportunities. The fighters, who despite the little attention given to them proudly represented their country. One of those fighters was Luisito ‘Lindol’ Espinosa. He was arguably holding the mantle as the best Filipino fighter before Pacquiao. He was a multi-divisional champion and feared fighter during his prime. He had longed for a fight with Hamed but the latter never gave Luisito the opportunity which probably speak volumes on the latter’s skills. I have no doubt that he will be considered one of the best fighters today, if he fought at the same time as Pacquiao. But life is unfair and sometimes people have to come to terms with their destiny. Now Luisito is now quietly living his life in Daly City and working a regular job. However, what should not be forgotten is that Luisito still has not received the $150,000 purse that he was promised when he fought Carlos Rios of Argentina. It’s a travesty that an athlete, who gave so much recognition to the country, still has not received proper justice. How can such an obvious case of corruption be left alone for so many years? Luisito may content with his life now, but there’s no doubt that this injustice has changed his life. If he had received the purse he was due; maybe he didn’t have to work odd Costco, where he worked at one time. There’s nothing wrong with working at Costco, but the $150,000 he was due could have certainly gone a long way in achieving his dream of having his own boxing gym. He could have certainly trained young Filipino boxers and assisted in producing more potential world champions. So for Pacquiao fans that have passionately supported the current pound for pound king, it’s time to devout the same kind of support for a boxer that helped paved the way for the current Filipino boxers. Boxers risk their lives each time that they stepped into the ring and it’s about time that Luisito gets paid.
