VAZQUEZ JR LEARNING HOW TO HANDLE SOUTHPAW SONSONA By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 31 Jan 2010 Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo V?zquez Jr is learning how to handle a southpaw like “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona when they clash in a title fight in Vazquez’ hometown of Bayamon, Puerto Rico on February 27. The fight card titled “Making History” is stirring a lot of interest in Puerto Rico because Sonsona won the WBO super flyweight title with a rousing win over Puerto Rico’s Jose “Carita” Lopez on September 4 last year at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada while Vazquez is the son of one of the all-time greats and triple world champion Wilfredo Vazquez Sr who is serving as his trainer along with Alex Matos. Under WBO rules on checking the fighters weights one month before a title fight the limit was 140.3 pounds but Vazquez demonstrated the condition he is in by tipping the scales at 129.5 pounds while Sonsona who is training at the Kennel Boxing Gym in San Leandro, California checked in at 130 pounds. Vazquez Jr is leaving his training team to plan a strategy for the fight and on how he should handle a southpaw like Sonsona. Vazquez Sr said “we are working on all angles of the strategy on how to fight a left-handed boxer like Sonsona and are preparing in the gym on how to handle him.” Sonsona himself is training hard and both promoter Sammy Gello-ani and trainer Nonito Donaire Sr are confident that he will be ready for the title fight. In fact Donaire Sr believes that with his punching power Sonsona can knock Vazquez Jr out. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
