MAYOL AGREES TO MEXICAN TITLE DEFENSE AGAINST OMAR NINO ROMERO
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 29 Jan 2010

World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol has decided to honor the contract he signed with Mexican boxing promoter Fausto Daniel Garcia after the WBC threatened to strip him of his title and will now defend his title against mandatory challenger and former champion Omar Nino Romero.
www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports learned that Manny Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz who handles Mayol alongside Pacquiao had informed the WBC that Mayol will defend his title in Mexico as originally planned on February 27.
Koncz had requested that Mayol be given a chance to stage a voluntary title defense on the Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey WBO welterweight title fight or on the eve of “The Event” at the Dallas Cowboys stadium on March 13.
Koncz indicated on Wednesday that they are trying to work out an agreement to stage the mandatory title defense on “The Event” undercard and should know whether the WBC and Mexican promoter Fausto Daniel Garcia would agree to the proposal.
However, it seems the Mexican promoter had asked for a customary step-aside fee which Mayol’s handlers and promoter were not prepared to pay resulting in Mayol accepting the title defense in Mexico. The WBC president was forced to act after promoter Garcia sent a legal letter to Sulaiman “demanding immediate compliance with the contract signed by the new champion Mayol.”
Mayol won the title by a second round TKO after Sosa’s cheek was fractured by a head-butt in the opening round and he never seemed to recover.
