PhilBoxing.com

Former WBO super flyweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona says he expects a “very competitive fight” when he meets undefeated Wilfredo Vazquez Jr for the WBO super bantamweight title relinquished by Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez who has moved up for a featherweight title crack at champion Steven Luevano this Sunday on a big fight card to be telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN.

Well-known Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani who has just returned from Puerto Rico where he accompanied Sonsona to a well-attended press conference at the Bayamon City Hall which kicked off the run up to the Feb. 27 fight for the vacant WBO Super Bantamweight title.

The 12 round bout presented by PR Best Boxing Promotions in association with All Star Boxing, Sampson Boxing LLC and SGG Sports Promotions and dubbed as "Making History" will take place at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and the first world title boxing match to be held in Puerto Rico for 2010.

Promoter Juan Rivera, president of PR Best Boxing Promotions said “We are starting 2010 with a big pay per view card which will have "Papito" (Vasquez Jr.) in his first world title shot against Marvin Sonsona, who many people in Puerto Rico know because he won the 115 lbs. title from Jose "Carita" Lopez last Sept. 2009.

Rivera said the event “pits two undefeated fighters, two of the top prospects in boxing for the title vacated by Juanma Lopez to move up in weight.” The boxing card will be transmitted via "Pay Per View" at a cost of $34.95 and can be seen in Puerto Rico, the United states of America, the Philippines and Central and South America.

Although Sonsona said it would be a competitive fight, he predicted “hopefully I will win by knockout.”

Gello-ani told us that the media work out for Marvelous Marvin Sonsona started at 1.30 p.m. at the Wilfredo Gomez Gym in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and he was assisted by the trainer of Ivan Calderon, Jose "Che-Che" Sanchez.

Sonsona went through the normal training routine which was watched by several press people with Sonsona going three rounds on the mitts with Sanchez.

Undefeated WBO light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon was present and praised Marvin for being a champion at a very young age. Gello-ani said Calderon gave Sonsona advise on being smart in handling his earnings while still young. Although Calderon has no fight yet he always goes to the gym to help in the training of new fighters..After the workout Marvin weighed eight pounds over the limit.

Gello-ani said Sonsona is now back in San Francisco and training hard under the watchful eye of Nonito Donaire Sr at the Kennel Boxing Gym in San Leandro.
