POPULAR KAMEDA BROTHERS TRAIN AT ELORDE GYM

PhilBoxing.com

Unknown to most, the popular Kameda brothers of Japan, undefeated WBC flyweight champion Koki Kameda (22-0, 14 KO’s)and younger brother Daiki Kameda (15-2, 11 KO’s) have been training at the sprawling Elorde gym along Sucat, Paranaque.

Viva Sports had a chance to talk to Daiki at a dinner hosted by the Elorde family at the Southpaw Grill in the sprawling complex put up by the late world junior lightweight champion and Hall-of-Fame great, Gabriel “Flash” Elorde. Toto Valencia served as interpreter.

Daiki who fights Thailand’s WBA flyweight champion Denkaosan Kaovichit (48-1-1, 20 KO’s) in a much-awaited rematch in Kobe, Japan on February 7 said he is “fit and ready” and will not let the decision remain in the hands of the judges after a controversial loss in their first meeting.

The 21 year old Daiki who is much younger than Denkaosan who is 33 told us through the interpreter that his "condition is very good and I am very strong and had very good sparring."

Daiki said his biggest asset was his power and predicted "I will knock him (Denkaosan) out in eight rounds. I am sure. No problem."

The younger Kameda said he likes training at the Elorde gym because of the availability of many excellent sparring partners and also because of the fine weather since right now it’s bitterly cold in Japan.

Meantime, Japanese and Thai promoters are trying to avoid a purse bid by negotiating an agreement on a title defense of 23 year old Koki Kameda against veteran and current interim champion , 32 year old Pongsaklek Wonjongkam who has a record of 74-3-1 with 39 knockouts.

Thai media reports indicated that the two sides are working on a revenue sharing scheme with Kameda getting 55 percent of the income and Pongsaklek 45 percent. The deadline for an agreement is fast approaching and unless the two sides work out a deal the WBC would call for a purse bid with the winner forced to hold the title fight within 90 days.

The winner of the Koki Kameda-Pongsaklek title fight is expected to defend the title against Thailand’s Panomrunglek Kratingdaenggym or Mexico’s Jesus Jimenez.

Koki Kameda won the title with a comfortable twelve round decision over the vastly experienced Daisuke Naito last November 29 in the process avenging younger brother Daiki’s twelve round loss to Naito on October 11, 2007 when the experience of Naito who sometimes trains at the ALA Gym in Cebu proved far too much.

Pongsaklek won the interim title with a handsome win over Mexico’s Julio Cesar Miranda in Thailand on April 24 last year.

Meantime, the third of the fighting Kameda brothers, undefeated bantamweight Tomoki Kameda 12-0 with 9 knockouts scored a rousing third round knockout over veteran Rodolfo Garay (26-17-1, 16 KO’s) to win the vacant FECARBOX 118 pound title in Durango, Mexico.

The 18 year old Kameda dropped Garay in the second round and finished him off at 1:53 of the third with no trouble at all.
