SONSONA, MORALES NEARING PEAK FORM

PhilBoxing.com

Mandaue City - WBO superflyweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona is approaching his peak fighting form for his first title defense against Mexico's Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez. Trainer Nonito Donaire, Sr. said that Sonsona reached twelve rounds in one sparring session last week.

Sonsona has changed sparring partners and sparred with Elf Gitgano for six torrid rounds Tuesday afternoon. Sonsona said that he is now at 85 percent in his conditioning. Donaire, Sr. is impressed with Sonsona's progress at the IPI Gym in Mandaue City. The 19 year old Gensan southpaw also hit the pads with Donaire after the sparring session. The impact of Sonsona’s punches resonated throughout the gym.

The champ has been visited by various local television crews for interviews and news footages for the past two weeks. Sonsona and Ciso Morales, along with Johnreil Casimero and Federico Catubay were interviewed on “SPORTSWORLD”, a Cebu television Friday sports talk show hosted by Bobby Inoferio on CCTN Ch. 47.

Sonsona was chosen by the WBO as its boxer of the month for September after he won the world crown against Jose “Carita” Lopez of Puerto Rico by 12 round unanimous decision. The undefeated Sonsona will return to Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada this November 21 to defend his title.

Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales of Talibon, Bohol will fight in the undercard against another Mexican, Miguel Angel Gonzales Piedras. Morales sparred for eight rounds Tuesday against Hanry John and Richard Betos under the supervision of trainer Jojo Palacios. Morales said that his training is going well and he is also approaching his peak conditioning. Morales' stamina has visibly improved as he jumped rope and hit the pads after his sparring sessions.

Morales is undefeated in 13 bouts with 8 KO's. After taking a break from boxing for nine months to rest an injured hand, he is making up for lost time by training doubly hard in the gym. During his absence, Sonsona won a world title. But Morales is determined and confident that he can also win a world title belt in the near future. This will be Morales’ first fight abroad and his first time to face a Mexican boxer.

Meanwhile, promoter Sammy Gello-ani informed that Johnreil Casimero's WBO interim world light flyweight title fight has been moved from December 12 to December 19. Casimero is also training at the IPI Gym for his upcoming fight in Managua, Nicaragua against Cesar Canchila of Colombia.
