YONNHY PEREZ GRABS JOSEPH AGBEKO’S IBF TITLE
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sun, 01 Nov 2009
And, it was a boxing night to remember.
Yonny Perez of Columbia who now makes Sta. Fe Springs, California his home, fought the IBF bantamweight champion, Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko of Ghana toe to toe for 12 solid rounds and in the end came out a winner via a unanimous decision.
The judges’ scores were as follows: Jerry Rott- 116-111, Glen Trowbridge- 117-110 and Barry Druxman- 117-110.
Although the scores gave Perez a rout, the actual fight did not seem to reflect them accurately. Yes, there was no doubt that Perez won the fight, but from our point of view, it was not by the wide margin scored by the judges. It seemed that it was closer than that.
In round 11, with the scores seemingly very close, a clash of heads occurred. Agbeko reacting to the head butt turned away from Perez in an apparent move to complain about the headbutt. However, Perez continued to hit Agbeko bringing him down to his knees for a count of 8 with a body hit.
Agbeko stood up immediately and complained to the referee, Robert Byrd. However, he was ignored and thus a knockdown was scored for Perez.
With the win Yonny Perez grabbed the IBF bamtamweight title from Joseph Agbeko who in turn grabbed it from the loud mouth Armenia, Vic Darchinyan last July at the Bank Atlantic Center in Florida.
Perez thus kept his record clean and improved it to boot to 20-0-0 (14KO). Agbeko on the other hand dropped to 27-2-0 (22KO).
In the supporting main event, Antonio de Marco (23-1-1 (10K0) knocked down Jose Alfaro (23-5-0, (10K0) three times in round 10 leading the referee, Joe Cortez to stop the fight at 2:07.
De Marco with the win, won the WBC Interim Lightweight title.
