Nino Out, Carlos Tamara Next for IBF Champ Viloria By Ryan Songalia PhilBoxing.com Wed, 28 Oct 2009 Tamara. Looks like IBF light flyweight champion Brian Viloria will not get a chance at redemption against former conqueror Omar Nino Romero as scheduled on December 5. Negotiations with the IBF #4 challenger of Mexico broke down and the IBF will now mandate Viloria to face the highest available contender, #8 Carlos Tamara of Colombia. The fight will most likely take place in Manila, Philippines. The reasons vary depending on the party being asked. According to IBF Championships Chairman Lindsey Tucker, Nino's promoter Hector Garcia sent the organization an email stating, "He is coming out of an injury and is recovering from the flu and he doesn't feel he should take the fight." Gary Gittelsohn, Viloria's manager, says the Nino camp were "unprofessional" in negotiations, reneging on their initial agreement and demanding more money. "They gave us a number, we sent a contract and they didn't sign it. We were bewildered by his silence after his people indicated that they wanted a certain amount of money and we met his demands." Gittelsohn says negotiations with the Tamara camp have been much smoother, adding that they are in "open dialogue" and confident of reaching an agreement soon. The deadline for open negotiations is November 26, after which the fight will go to a purse bid. "The only guy that has to show up is Viloria for us to fight because we have a signed contract," says Nelson Fernandez, manager of Tamara. Fernandez says that his contract reads December 5, the original date for the fight. Gittelsohn says that the promotion of the fight has suffered due to delays from Nino's camp and that the fight will likely be pushed to January. The Waipahi, HI native Viloria, 26-2 (15 KO), is in his second reign as champ of the 108 pound division. He began his second reign with a dramatic 11th round knockout of Ulises Solis in April and made a successful defense in August against Jesus Iribe. Tamara, who currently resides in North Bergen, NJ, is 26 years old with a 19-4 (14 KO) record. A decorated amateur, Tamara won a silver medal in the 2003 Santo Domingo Pan American games, losing to Yan Barthelemy in the finals. Tamara lost in the second round of the 2004 Athens Games to Italian Alfonso Pinto. Tamara's only title opportunity came at 112 pounds against long-reigning Argentinian WBO champ Omar Narvaez on a one-sided decision. His two biggest wins in the pros came against Alejandro Hernandez, who will challenge WBO super flyweight champion Marvin Sonsona next month, and Juan Esquer. Tamara has won two in a row since the Esquer fight, which was followed by a 14-month layoff due to a contract dispute with former manager Antonio Gonzalez and promoter Tuto Zavala. Tamara won a six-round decision in a rematch with Alfonso De la Hoz on October 17 in Barranquilla, Colombia although BoxRec.com has no record of the fight. Filipino company Solar Sports will promote in association with Top Rank. Ryan Songalia is a member of the Boxing Writers Association of America. He can be reached at songaliaboxing@aol.com.
