Where Goes The Dream?

PhilBoxing.com

Z "The Dream" Gorres was his usual impressive self when he scored a 6th round TKO win over Mexican veteran Cruz Carbajal in Nayarit, Mexico.

The southpaw from Mandaue City, Cebu displayed excellent ring generalship, moving side to side, and releasing a wide array of punches to keep Carbajal at bay. The Mexican tried to cut the ring off and had his moments with his right hand lead. A clash of heads in the fourth which resulted in a cut on Gorres' right eyebrow momentarily stopped the Filipino's momentum.

But Gorres boxed beautifully using a right uppercut as his lead punch or mixing it with his combos that included a left straight that landed with impunity. Carbajal signalled he would not continue to fight because of an injured left arm but the final outcome was never in doubt for the ALA gym boxer.

Cruz Carbajal, a 35 year old former WBO bantamweight world titlist (2002-2004), has fought quality boxers. He has lost to the likes of Fernando Montiel, Silence Mabuza and Ratanachai Sor Vorapin.

Gorres (30W-2 L-2D, 16 KO's) is now 27 years old. He is bigger now and fighting as a bantamweight for the second time. He has not been involved in many brutal ring wars that slow down a fighter. But boxers like him, who rely on speed and reflexes, do slow down with age.

Last March 14, 2009 he beat Mexico's Roberto Leyva by 7th round TKO for the WBO Oriental bantamweight title. He has shown that he can go the distance with the world's best in his weight range : a controversial 12 round split decision loss to Fernando Montiel for the WBO world superflyweight title last February 2007 and a split 12 round draw with Vic Darchinyan in an IBF title eliminator last February 2008.

His nemesis, Montiel was a victim of a third round upset stoppage at the hands of Alejandro Valdez in this fight card.
Gorres deserves one more shot at a world title and it should be soon. He deserves to see his dream become a reality.
