ABA 5-1 in Polomok Card! PhilBoxing.com Sat, 05 Sep 2009 American Boxing Academy (ABA) fighter Fernando Lumacad entered the ring in this peaceful town of Polomolok just outside General Santos City to a warm greeting by an excited crowd estimated to be at over 5,000 people. The larger than expected crowd came to watch hometown fighters Jether Oliva and Fernando Lumacad both of General Santos take the next step in their young promising boxing careers. By the end of the night the crowd appeared to have gotten what they came for. Both Oliva and Lumacad won impressivly in entertaining fights. Oliva the unbeaten Jr flyweight easily outpointed his opponent Paithong Muangsima of Thailand. Oliva 15-0 started fast dominating the early rounds before suffering a flash knockdown in the 3rd round. Fully recovered by the 4th, Oliva retook control from the southpaw thailander and never looked back, as the GenSan product coasted to an easy 10 round points win. In the much anticipated return of American Boxing Academy superflyweight Fernando Lumacad, now 20 wins and 2 losses was an exciting slugfest while it lasted. The 23 yr old Lumacad easily disposed of an overmatched Rodel Veronque in 3 rounds. Lumacad went on the attack early putting the game but clearly outclassed Veronque down hard with a fast right hand late in the first round, Veronque rose on unsteady feet and just survived Lumacads barrage at the bell ending the first round. Lumacad went on to administer more punishment in the second round on Vernque to the obvious delight of the vocal and energized Polomolok crowd. Lumacad finally put an end to things for good in the 3rd with a flurry of punches, sending Veronque to the floor again for the final time, prompting the referee to call a halt. Both Oliva and Lumacad are scheduled to fight for WBF regional titles later this month. The event co-promoted by Oliva's manager JC Boy Manangquil and Lumacad's manager Ken Smith along with Filipino boxing legend and former world champion Gerry Penalosa and Polomolok's mayor was reported to be the largest boxing crowd attendance at a fight this year on the entire Mindanao. The crowd was treated to some real action fights on the undercard as General Santos veteran road warrior Michael Rodriques who has been cursed his entire career while sufferuing home town decisions while on the road received one of his own when he was awarded a close 8rnd MD over young ABA fighter Jan Jan Claveria[11-2]. Rodriques and Claveria fought on mostly even terms thru out the 8 round battle with Claveria pressing the action with Rodriques countering often. The bout ended with the crowd cheering on both fighters who slugged it out to the end. Rodriques was awarded the fight on 2 of the judges cards with the 3rd judge scoring the fight a draw. In another exciting pier brawl undefeated Roberto Udtuhan 12-0 11kos of the American Boxing Academy knocked down Petras Abad of Sarrangani 4 times before the fight was finally stopped in the 4th round with Abad unable to continue. Udtuhan another Panabo City amatuer standout is slated to fight later this month in Cebu on the undercard of WBO InterCont Jr Featherweight Champion Ramie Laput. In a 4 round jr flyweight contest former amateur standout and Polomolok native Froylan Salodar had his entire hometown crowd cheering for him while he ran his record to 2-0 2Kos. Saludar who is from Polomolok and was also a former standout on the famed Panabo City amatuer team excited his hometown folk when he went on the attack early and overwhelmed a game but outgunned Ramie Gaabon. Saludar dropped Gaabon for the count late in the very first round Two other ABA fighters also scored impressive wins on the undercard.
