RUMBLE IN RAMA UPDATES
By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Fri, 04 Sep 2009
Promoter Sammy Gello-ani has informed philboxing.com that WBO Junior Bantamweight Champion Jose “Carita” Lopez (39-7-2, 32 KO’s) of Puerto Rico and challenger “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona (13-0, 12 KO’s) of the Philippines met for the first time at the final pre-fight press conference in advance of their title clash that tops Rumble at Rama IX, set for Friday, September 4th, at Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario.
Both fighters were subdued but confident of victory. The 37 year old Lopez said that Sonsona’s skills were nothing he hasn’t seen and dealt with before. The 19 year old Sonsona acknowledged that Lopez will be a tough opponent. He also said that if he sticks to his game plan, he will bring the championship belt home to the Philippines.
Team Sonsona has transferred already at the Days Inn Hotel Orilia just infront of Casino Rama. On Thursday there will be a scheduled rules meeting at 5.30 p.m. while the official weigh in and medicals will be at 8.00a.m. Friday Sept. 4. FIGHT TIME is Friday evening (Saturday morning Manila Time).
In the evening’s co-feature, former IBF Junior Featherweight champion “The Canadian Kid” Steve Molitor (29-1, 11 KO’s) will face veteran Dario Azuaga (76-15-2, 64 KO’s) in an eight round bout. Filipino boxing fans may remember Azuaga because he fought Gerry Penalosa in Antipolo four years ago and lost a one sided decision.
