That’s enough Zzzzzzs Gorres By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Thu, 16 Jul 2009 I mean Gorres’ non-participation in big fights in the 115-118 lb divisions has taken a longer time than it should. Wasn’t there an arrangement where Z was supposed to fight the winner of the Vic Darchinyan-Dimitri Kirilov IBF championship fight? However each of the opposing sides assert that Z or Vic won their eliminator fight in Cebu, the decision stands on record as a split draw. The cut Gorres suffered in the Darchinyan fight doused cold water on any plan for an immediate rematch. Darchinyan went on to fight Kirilov with the winner supposed to defend the title against Gorres. Darchinyan had since fought and conquered Kirilov, Christian Mijares and Jorge Arce in the super-flyweight division. The Darchinyan-Mijares fight breached the agreement, if indeed there was one, to fight again Gorres. Darchinyan also tried to invade the bantamweights to further veer away from the Gorres fight. With Darchinyan pushed back to where he is being unsuccessful in his foray in the 118 division, Gorres can pursue the long delayed fight with the now not as raging bull Darchinyan. But despite his recent loss and Nonito Donaire’s entry, Darchinyan remains a force in the 115-lb division. He can still brag on his prowess not having been beaten as a super-flyweight. His two losses were south and north of the 115-lb division. As the WBO Oriental bantamweight champion and ranked in the top 3 WBO world bantams, Gorres can have a rematch with Fernando Montiel at 118. The Montiel fight still makes sense considering that Gorres won in 1 of the 3 judges’ score cards. In that fight, Gorres was penalized with two 1-point deductions without prior referee warning allegedly for clinching. Gorres, though, needs to improve on his stamina to avoid resorting to clinching in the latter rounds which weakness was shown in the Montiel and Darchinyan fights. Or a fight with WBO champion Jose Carita Lopez at 115 can be pursued. If Lopez is unavailable, Z can train his sights at the other sanctioning bodies’ titles. From a fighter’s point of view, the proliferation of sanctioning bodies is an advantage as this provides opportunities for the fighter to vie for and win championship recognition. Z Gorres still has what it takes to become a world champion. He almost did it in his first attempt and he could do it in the next. And a title belt could only be within reach if Gorres rises up from his extended slumber of inactivity against the top guys. Top 115-118 lb guys Vic Darchinyan, Fernando Montiel, Jorge Arce, Hozomi Hasegawa, Anselmo Moreno, Joseph Agbeko, Nonito Donaire are busy fighting. Z Gorres needs to be in that group of top ranked active fighters. That’s long enough Zzzzzzs Gorres! Click here to view a list of other articles written by Epifanio M. Almeda. |
