Beauty in the B.EA.ST By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Fri, 01 May 2009 B.EA.ST is short for ?Battle of East and West?. At this time, it seems that there is nothing more to know about the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton battle except its outcome. Let me just add a little bit in pointing out the beauty in this B.EA.ST. Manny and Ricky are conducting themselves truly as gentlemen champions worthy of the adulation of the boxing public. They are fine examples for the young citizens of this world to emulate. It cannot be denied that their interviews are watched and heard by the youth. Hopefully, the young fighters will learn from the gentlemanly conduct Ricky and Manny exhibit toward each other. They don?t trash talk and instead, they exchange pats, smiles and they speak highly of each other?s accomplishments. They show to the critics of boxing what boxing really is. What a beauty to behold coming from these two ring beasts. Well, the fighters themselves said that when they are already inside the ring, they cease to be nice and become nasty. The Pacman and the Hitman, of course, refer to the viciousness of the exchanges that they will conspire to commit within each round in the ring. I say conspire because, while one?s aim is the other?s ?jugular?, the ultimate objective is to give the boxing public their time and money?s worth. Manny repeatedly says that he just does his job to make the people happy. I do hope that Manny and Ricky will not deviate from the path of sportsmanship no matter what. One such unforgettable gesture is the sportsmanship Eric Morales displayed during his second fight with Manny. Midway in their fight, and after a break called by the referee, Manny was still looking at the referee while Eric was already in the position to attack. Instead of jumping on the opportunity which opened up at that very moment to slug Manny who breached the admonition to ?protect yourself at all times?, Eric touched Manny?s gloves to make him ready for the fight to resume. A Morales punch delivered at that instance could not have been considered a foul. That sportsmanship gesture Eric showed should add to his stature as a hall of fame fighter. Manny and Ricky will engage in a battle in which the stakes are high. One wants to take the title and recognition of the other. While Manny will be crowned the Ring Magazine and IBO 140-lb top dog as well as the lineal championship that Ricky holds if he wins, Ricky aims to unseat Manny in the latter?s number 1 P4P ranking. While many might disagree that a win over Manny will automatically make Ricky the top P4P fighter, Ricky will be able to make a reasonable claim and recognition to it being the man who beat the man. Ricky and Manny are in a battle representing the east and the west. Each carry into the ring the hopes and best wishes of their respective followings from the East, West, North and South. While Manny is from the east and Ricky, the west, it cannot be denied that each has fans from the other?s turf and from all over the world. While boxing is beastly in its destructive character, this event of the year candidate has its beauty. It is a beauty that this dream fight between a beast junior-welterweight in Ricky Hatton and a beast featherweight and lightweight in Manny Pacquiao is already here and now. It is a beauty that this fight will display speed, power, durability, and stamina ? the best - in the fighters involved. It is a beauty that these ?beasts? in the ring are gentlemen outside of it. Seldom is beauty not to be feasted on by observant eyes. Beauty, Webster?s says, is a quality or a combination of qualities that delight the senses or appeals to the mind. Boxing has its beauty. Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton will do battle with ?a quality or a combination of qualities that delight the senses or appeals to the mind? even of those who are not die hard boxing fans. It is no wonder that a new record number of eyes will not miss to behold the beauty in the B.EA.ST. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Epifanio M. Almeda. |
