HOT START FOR PINOY BOXERS
PhilBoxing.com Mon, 06 Apr 2009
BANGKOK ? Smart-Team Philippines, behind light flyweight Gerson Nietes and featherweight Charly Suarez, debuted with aplomb late Saturday to share with host Thailand early leadership in the 31st King?s Cup boxing tournament at the swank Gwangwongwan Mall here.
The diminutive Nietes of Negros Occidental rallied from a second round deficit to beat aggressive Syrian Wardie Halder in the 54 kilogram class, while Suarez dominated Chantasone Xayyalak of Laos in the 57 kg. division to both advance to the next round.
The Philippines, whose participation, under the aegis of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines headed by chairman Manny V. Pangilinan and president Ricky Vargas, was made possible through the financial support of Philippine Sports Commission chairman Harry Angping, is tied with Thailand (2-0) and paces Korea, China and Turkmenistan, all with one win apiece.
Although Nietes took an early 3-2 lead, he allowed the game Syrian to dictate the pace and grab the initial round, 8-6, even trailing further back, 13-9, after two rounds.
Warned by national coaches Ronald Chavez and Elmer Pamisam that he was letting the fight slip away, Nietes responded with mean uppercuts and blinding hand speed to chip away at his opponent?s lead, winning the bout?s next 14 points to emerge with a 23-19 decision.
Two more Filipino boxers scale the ring in Day 2 of action Sunday.
Strutting their wares against Thai opponents are flyweight Aston Francis Palicte (51 kg.) and veteran Genebert Basadre in the light welterweight class (64 kg.).
That Palicte and Basadre are up against hometown bets is not lost on the Philippine delegation.
?The boys are nevertheless undaunted,? said Ed Picson, ABAP executive director and head of the Filipino contingent.
?They prepared long and hard for this, and they're in high spirits. The crowd may be boisterous but we?re happy to note that there was a smattering of Filipino expats also screaming their lungs out for our team. They promised to bring more kababayans Sunday."
