YOUTH VS EXPERIENCE SET APRIL 4 IN CEBU Magbanua vs Vorapin; Dapudong vs. Batawang PhilBoxing.com Wed, 11 Mar 2009 Magbanua, Vorapin. Twenty three-year-old Rolando "Smooth Operator" Magbanua will make the first defense of his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Interim Bantamweight title against former world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin of Thailand on April 4 at the Cebu Coliseum in Cebu City. In what is expected to be the second appearance of Mindanao boxers in Cebu City, WBO Asia Pacific Youth Miniflyweight champion Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong, 22, of M'lang, North Cotabato will challenge the veteran Bert Batawang for the WBO junior flyweight Oriental title. The card, dubbed Youth vs. Experience: The Battle, will also feature two more bouts featuring the undefeated Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva, 22, and Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, 19, who will both meet Thai fighters from the well-known Kokiet Boxing Club of Bangkok. The disparity in age and experience between Magbanua and Vorapin, and Battawang and Dapudong is very glaring. Vorapin, a former world champion, is 32 years old and has fought 84 fights as a professional fighter winning 73 with 49 KOs. He lost in his last fight to Michael Domingo of the Philippines for the WBO Oriental Bantamweight championship. Battawang, 37, has fought 60 professional fights winning 48 with 36 KOs. He has fought for the world title but lost by decision. Magbanua, undefeated in 14 fights with 9 KOs, snatched the WBO regional title Feb. 21 in a classic 6-round stoppage of Mexican Jose Angel Cota while Dapudong (19 wins, 2 losses, 12 KOs) won an 8 round fight by decision during the same fight card. North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Pinol of Braveheart Boxing Promotions and Cebu-based boxing promoter Sammy Gelloani of SGG Promotions are jointly staging the fight. Other Mindanao boxers seeing action during the fight are: Richard "Lion Heart" Betos, Jermie "The Worm" Jabel, Rey "The Bull" Juntilla and several young fighters. WBO Asia Pacific Champion Jundy "Pretty Boy" Maraon, who scored a sensational 3rd round knockout over Jason Egera, and Glenn "The Rock" Porras who thrashed Thai fighter Daothon Sithsoey in one round will not be seeing action in the April 4 card. Maraon, 24, (13 wins, 10 KOs, 1 draw) and Porras, 23, (21 wins, 3 losses, 15 KOs) are still recovering from injuries suffered in their last fights. |
