GUARDO BATS FOR REGIONAL BOXERS' TRAINING PhilBoxing.com Wed, 11 Mar 2009 Newly-appointed ABAP project director for Region 7, sportsman Jonathan Guardo, has made known his preference of holding the training of amateur boxers in the region, rather than send them to the national training pool where they will end up lagging behind in international competitions. Guardo, who met with ABAP regional president Nemesio Monton last week where the latter handed him his appointment letter, has emphasized the importance of not uprooting the young boxers from their family while citing that Cebu has some of the best facilities and coaches available for those selected for the training program. "It is crucial that they are not that far from their families, so they can still be guided, and besides, we have some of the best facilities and coaches here. So why send them elsewhere?" asked the multi-awarded Cebuano sportsman. Guardo has also cited facilities such as the ALA Boxing Gym, which has been very successful and has reaped several numerous national titles in the past. "I've heard there had been several ALA fighters in the past who were recruited to the national team, only to come back to Cebu after a few days as they could not adjust to the system at the national training pool," explained Guardo. Guardo, however, remained confident that with the new management of the ABAP led by businessman Manny Pangilinan and Ricky Vargas, all these concerns will be addressed, and a new system carried out regarding the training program of promising young fighters who have just come out of grassroots program. Last week, Guardo visited the Yani Sta. Cruz gym in Talisay City, where some young fighters were working out under noted trainer Nonito Donaire Sr. It was his first official visit to a boxing gym after having been appointed as regional project director.
