NIETES CONFIDENT MILENDO CAN HANDLE RACHMAN PhilBoxing.com Mon, 09 Mar 2009 CEBU CITY--WBO minimumweight kingpin Donnie Nietes announced yesterday that he is confident his stablemate Milan Milendo can withstand the experience advantage, and eventually win over ex-IBF minifly boss Muhammad Rachman when they meet on March 14 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel here. Rachman versus Milendo will be the co-main event of a card being bankrolled by ALA Promotions in cooperation with ABS-CBN Sports, with the main event pitting Z "The Dream" Gorres going up against ex-world champ Roberto Leyva for 12 rounds. Speaking over DyHP-RMN's radio program "Pinoy Boxing" hosted by Salven Lagumbay and Edward Ligas, the soft-spoken Nietes informed that he has sparred against both Rachman and Milendo, and is very familiar with the styles of both fighters. "I had sparred with Rachman in Indonesia. He's a good fighter. I have also been sparring with Milendo lately at the ALA Gym," announced the WBO champion, who recently defended his title with an easy unanimous decision over Mexican Erik Ramirez in Oaxaca, Mexico. "I think Milendo can handle Rachman. I find Milendo a much more difficult opponent in sparring than Rachman. On that basis, I think Milendo can win this fight," Nietes told the radio program "Pinoy Boxing." Nietes had just arrived from Bacolod City where he was warmly received by local provincial, city and town officials, including Bacolod City Mayor Bing Leonardia, a constant fixture in Manny Pacquiao's fights in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, ALA chief trainer Edito Villamor also informed the radio show that Rachman and his team are arriving in Cebu on Wednesday, May 11, while Team Leyva jets in from Mexico the following day. A final press conference takes place on Thursday, March 12, with the official weigh-in taking place at the SM City Cebu's atrium starting 11AM on March 13. The March 14 boxing extravaganza, titled "Judgement at the Waterfront," will also feature Michael Domingo in a ten-round bout against Monico Laurente of the Elorde Stable. Young James Bacon will also see action in a grudge rematch with William Jorge of Bukidnon. "I'd like to tell William Jorge that when he beat me the first time, I was inexperienced. This time, he is going to fight a whole new different fighter in me," warned Bacon, who knew that Jorge was tuned in to the radio show. Joseph Von Minoza takes on Rufino Mante on the same card, while Marjohn Makahilig battles Marlon Ariesga. Ricardo Campana goes up against Jherpol Valero, while Jomar Cordinillo meets Ricky Nunez in the curtain-raiser. |
