ABAP APPOINTS GUARDO AS REGIONAL PROJECT DIRECTOR PhilBoxing.com Tue, 03 Mar 2009 Renowned multi-awarded Cebuano sportsman Jonathan Guardo has been appointed by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) as its Regional Project Director with the task of furthering the advancement of amateur boxing in the region. ABAP regional president Nemie Monton, who personally handed Guardo his appointment papers last week, cited the 39-year-old sports patron's continuing dedication to sports, through his Greater Cebu Sports Organizing Committee (GCSOC) and hopes to have amateur boxing benefit from Guardo's visionary approach to sports development. "I have been following his GCSOC movement through the various newspapers and activities, and have been quite impressed that it has made strides in truly harnessing the potentials of our young athletes," Monton said when sought for comment. As Project Director, Guardo will oversee amateur programs not only in Cebu, but also neighboring provinces like Bohol, Siquijor, and Negros Oriental. In May of 2006, Guardo had set the wheels in motion for a private organization that will help develop Cebuano athletes and provide them the opportunity to excel in competitions around the country and abroad, thus the GCSOC was finally hatched later that year. Guardo's appointment to the ABAP position is deemed as a breathe of fresh air for amateur boxing, as he is expected to work hand in hand with national officials who, like him, are steeped in corporate background. Businessman Manny Pangilinan of the PLDT-Smart fame sits as the national chairman with his vice-chair William Ramirez. Serving as national president is Ricky Vargas. Secretary-general Patrick Gregorio is also of corporate background, having been a successful hotel executive prior to his recent appointment. Mediaman Ed Picson is the national executive director. With Guardo's appointment, he is expected to be working closely with Monton and ABAP regional chairman, Representative Henry Teves of Negros, as well as ABAP consultant Mayor Dan Neri Lim of Tagbilaran City. "I am honored by this appointment. This comes at a time when I have just immersed myself in boxing, having just set up a boxing stable made up of young kids under renowned trainer Nonito Donaire Sr," said Guardo, whose company Uniherb also sponsors IBF and IBO flyweight king Nonito Donaire Jr through its Arthro Kontra Arthritis product.
