North Cotabato Congressman Launches First Gold Amateur Boxing Program PhilBoxing.com Thu, 26 Feb 2009 A program which aims to train public high school sports teachers into amateur boxing trainers and instructors has been started by Congressman Bernardo Pinol Jr. (Lakas, North Cotabato 2nd District) and the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) in at least three national high schools in North Cotabato. Called "First Gold," the program hopes to lay the foundation of a sustained amateur boxing grassroots program that would eventually contribute to the national effort to win the Philippines first gold medal in the Olympic Games. Congressman Pinol, younger brother of North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Pinol, said the "First Gold" program hopes to include boxing in the sports program in public high schools all over the province. "Our sports program in the public schools has largely been without direction. Instead of teaching high school students calisthenics, why don't we teach them the basics of boxing as a form of physical exercise?" asked the first term congressional representative who served as provincial administrator to then Governor Pinol. "In the process, we allow the boys or girls, to discover their potentials in the sport. If they are good, then they could be recruited to join the national amateur boxing team," Congressman Pinol said. Launched last month by Cong. Pinol and ABAP President Ricky Vargas who visited Kidapawan City, the capital of North Cotabato, "First Gold" is now conducting its first two-week trainors training program at the Spottswood Methodist Center at the foot of the majestic Mt. Apo. Participants in the program include sports teachers in the different high schools in the second congressional district. The program will later be expanded to other high schools all over the province. North Cotabato under then governor Manny Pinol started a grassroots amateur boxing program in 1998 that has so far produced at least three regional boxing titles. |
