BATTLE of the BANTAMWEIGHTS Weigh-in Updates
By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Sat, 21 Feb 2009

Gerry Penalosa and German Meraz both weighed in at 120 lbs. during the official weigh-in held at the Cebu Grand Hotel for the Battle of the Bantamweights fight card to be held tomorrow Saturday at the New Cebu Coliseum.
Meraz (27W-7L-2D, 11KO's) has promised to give Gerry a good fight. Penalosa, the reigning WBO 118 lb. World champ, will attempt to win a third title against WBO superbantamweight champ Juan Manuel Lopez this April.
Rolando Magbanua and Mexican Jose Angel Cota both weighed in at 118 lbs. They will fight for the interim WBO Oriental bantamweight title.
I approached Magbanua after the weight-in and he was in a serious mood even after I made a remark about the eye-catching hairstyle of his Mexican foe. He said hairstyles have nothing to do with fights and that he was ready for Cota.
Defending WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight titlist Jason Egera and challenger Jundy Maraon both weighed 117 lbs. Glen Porras weighed in at 118 lbs. and his opponent Daothon Sisuey of Thailand weighed 117 lbs.
Other boxers in the supporting bouts made weight, except for Joy Pol who weighed over the featherweight limit at 136 lbs but will still face Lorenzo Villanueva with heavier gloves.
Fight fans are advised to come early, the first fight between bantamweights Jestoni Pepito and Edison Soriano will start at 3:30 pm. This is a good opportunity for fight fans to size up the Mindanao fighters. Other undercard match-ups include Israel Salud vs. Jerry Pahal, Richard Bestos vs. Mike Romulo, Edrin Dapudong vs Ruther del Castillo, and Glenn Gonzales vs. Jose Ocampo. Swing bouts to be scheduled pending the result of the televised bouts involve Jermie Jabel vs. Manny Talisic and Rommel Asenjo vs. Marlon Villanueva.
The taped bout for the TV coverage will start at 6:30 pm involving Porras and Sissuey. Penalosa's bout is scheduled at 9 pm.
