ABA-TRAINED WHITTAKER TO CHALLENGE WBC CHAMP VERNON FORREST PhilBoxing.com Fri, 20 Feb 2009 Charles Whittaker of the Cayman Islands will get his long-awaited chance to fight for the world championship this April 27th when he takes on WBC Superwelterweight champion Vernon Forrest. Forrest, the former WBC welterweight champion and current WBC super welterweight champion has a record of 39-2. The Championship fight will be viewed around the world on Showtime. Whittaker, a main stay at Ken Smith's American Boxing Academy (ABA) training camp in the Philippines is scheduled to arrive at the ABA camp with his sparring partners in tow as early as this weekend. Whittaker 36-9 and the WBO #6 and WBC # 10 rated Jr Middleweight will start his championship training under the watchful eyes of ABA trainer "Storman" Norman Wilson. Wilson who has trained Whittaker to the top of the Jr Middleweight division had this to say: "Charles will be in the Philippines in a couple of days and then we will start our real training camp. I am very confident in Charles' ability to win the world title". Whittaker has fought his last two fights in the Philippines under American Boxing Academy promoter Ken Smith, scoring easy KO's both times. He is poised to unseat the defending WBC champ according to trainer Wilson "styles make fights. Charles matches up against Forrest very well. Whittaker will beat him and take his belt.I am going to get Charles in the best shape of his life, and Charles will do the rest." Whittaker an American resident born in the Caymans is the most decorated boxer from his country, and come April 2009 Whittaker could become his country's first world boxing champion. "I think Charles has everything going for him coming into this fight. He has his whole country behind him. He could beat Forrest easier than people may think. I have seen both fighters a lot, and the match up is world class, but Whittaker just has more heart and desire to win this fight" said ABA founder Ken Smith.
