Meraz vows to give Penalosa good fight

CEBU CITY -- German Meraz of Mexico did not make any predictions or promises of a knockout but he vowed to give WBO Bantamweight champ Gerry Penalosa a good fight. This was the statement he gave during the press conference held Wednesday afternoon at the Cebu Grand Hotel.

Meraz was the only foreign fighter available as fellow Mexican Jose Cota and Thailander Daothon Sissuey have yet to arrive in Cebu.

Cota will be facing Filipino Rolando Magbanua for the interim WBO Oriental Bantamweight title. Sissuey will be facing Glen Porras in a ten round bantamweight fight.

The main event will be a ten round fight which will serve as Penalosa's tune-up prior to his title challenge against WBO superbantamweight champ Juan Manuel Lopez in April. Penalosa said that he will reevaluate his career plans after the Lopez bout. He has said this may be his last fight in the country and this is a fond farewell of sorts for his Cebuano fans.

Another interesting supporting bout featured the WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight tussle between defending champ Jason Egera and Jundy Maraon. There will be eight other bouts in this promotion. Fight fans are advised to come early at 4 pm. The first bout to be featured on television will be Porras ? Sissuey which be taped at 6:30 PM. The fights will be aired at ABS-CBN Studio 23 delayed for a few hours on the same night. But by watching this event live, Cebuano fans can see for themselves the up and coming fighters from Mindanao.

One of the ideas being floated around during the presscon was the possibility of these boxers meeting the more famous boxers from Cebu ? notably the ALA gym ? in the near future.
