THE MEXICANS ARE COMING PhilBoxing.com Sun, 15 Feb 2009 Meraz (L) and Cota. Former Mexican Pacific Coast flyweight champion German "Panteonero" Meraz and compatriot Jose Angel "Bocho" Cota will be arriving early this week for their engagement in a big boxing event dubbed "Battle of the Bantamweights" at the Cebu City Coliseum Feb. 21. Meraz, who will be flying out of Hermosillo, Mexico Sunday (US time) is expected to arrive early morning of Feb. 18, three days ahead of his 10-round engagement with World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa. Meraz, along with his trainer Roberto Valenzuela, will be taking a long flight that will pass through Paris and Doha, Qatar because the Mexican fighter does not have a visa to enter the United States, a route which would have been shorter. Boxing writer Lee Bates, who contacted Meraz for the Cebu City fight, however, said that the Mexican fighter is prepared for his tough assignment against Penalosa having trained hard in Hermosillo after receiving the information that he will be fighting the Filipino champion. The fight against Meraz will be Penalosa's tune up bout against Puerto Rico's Juan Manuel Lopez for the latter's superbantamweight title on April 24 in Puerto Rico. Cota, on the other hand, along with his handlers Arturo Franco and Joseph Steve, will be arriving Feb. 17 from Mexicali, Mexico. He will be going up against North Cotabato's bantamweight prospect Rolando Magbanua, 23, for the WBO Interim Bantamweight Oriental title in the main undercard of the Penalosa-Meraz fight. Magbanua is undefeated in 13 professional fights with 8 KOs. Also featured in the Feb. 21 card are WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion Jason Egera who will defend his title against another Braveheart boxer, Jundy Maraon of Suminot, Zamboanga del Sur, and another bantamweight Glenn Porras who will go up against Thailand's Daothon, Sithsoey in 10. Maraon is undefeated with 12 wins (9 KOs) and 1 draw while Porras is 20 wins (12 KOs) with 3 losses. The Feb. 21 card, which will be carried by ABS-CBN and The Filipino Channel worldwide, is jointly promoted by Cebu City based boxing impresario Sammy Gelloani and North Cotabato Vice Governor Manny Pinol who owns Braveheart Boxing Club along with his brothers. |
