MOSLEY: TWICE AS SWEET
By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Mon, 26 Jan 2009

Shane Mosley added one more great performance in his Hall of Fame resume with a 9th round stoppage win over the highly favored Antonio Margarito.
In the very first round, Sugar Shane was not only sweet, he was spicy and smoking. His lightning fast combinations had no trouble finding their mark on Margarito?s face. Mosley landed a thudding right hook to the body later in the round that even Margarito had to acknowledge by nodding his head. The Tijuana Tornado continued to press in the second round but he could not solve Mosley?s baffling hand speed especially the right straight.
As the rounds progressed, Margarito managed to land during furious exchanges but he could not hurt Mosley. The 37year old Mosley ( 46 -5, 39 KO?s) was winning every round and in the 8th a heavy barrage toppled the 30 year old Margarito (37-6, 27 KO?s) who was visibly dazed when he stood up. In the ninth, Margarito was pinned helpless on the ropes as Mosley landed another brutal volley prompting referee Raul Caiz to call a halt to the bout 43 seconds into the round.
Mosley now owns the WBA welterweight title. He had previously won titles at lightweight, welterweight and jr. middleweight. It has been almost five years since he lost his last world title, the undisputed jr. middleweight belt, to Ronald ?Winky? Wright.
When I wrote a preview for this bout, I kept referring to Mosley in the past tense. His performance showed that he still belongs to the present. Is there a Manny Pacquiao in his future?
Mosley may have started this fight with a statement for Margarito but he ended it with a statement for everyone - for all those who doubted him and said that he does not deserve boxing?s most hallowed ring name, ?Sugar?.
This victory is twice as sweet.
