ABA'S LUMACAD WANTS TO CHALLENGE FUENTES
PhilBoxing.com Mon, 26 Jan 2009
Mindanao prospect Fernando Lumacad of the American Boxing Academy (ABA) wants to settle the issue of who is the best flyweight in the country, as he and his team indicate they want to challenge RP flyweight champ Rocky Fuentes for the latter's belt.
"The heavy-handed Fuentes (27 wins and 6 loss) of the famed ALA gym in Cebu will get the opportunity to prove if he is still the best flyweight in the entire Philippine Islands when he fights his mandatory defense of the RP flyweight title against #1 rated Fernando "TaTa" Lumacad," said ABA founder Ken Smith.
Lumacad, the former amateur boxing star from General Santos City has been under American Boxing Academy management and being trained by American head trainer Norman Wilson for just under 1 year. Lumacad's manager and American Boxing Academy owner Ken Smith has told Philboxing.com: "The challenge is out there already. I spoke with Michael Aldeguer last month while he was in Las Vegas and I told him that we are interested in Lumacad getting the opportunity to fight for the RP title against his champion Rocky Fuentes.. Michael indicated to me that he wants to promote this fight too".
Lumacad who just fought for the WBO Oriental Flyweight title last Oct. 6th in Cebu is the RP #1 rated mandatory challenger as reported by GAB. In Lumacads first try at a WBO regional title he was held to a disappointing 12 round split draw against his world class opponent from Thailand.
RP flyweight champ Fuentes most recently defended the Philippine title on Sept 2008 against Louie Bantiuge. Fuentes won the vacant title on July 2007 and has defended it twice. Lumacad is coming off an easy 10round decision over DonDon Jemenia Dec 21st 2008. Both fighters are currently preparing for their mandatory battle for the RP Flyweight title this Febuary.
Smith said "I would love to co-promote this RP title fight along with my good friend Mayor JoJo Lopez in Maasim, but we will first have to listen to ALA promotions offer for this fight first."
