MOSLEY STOPS MARGARITO!
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 25 Jan 2009
Shane Mosley proved he is still at the top of his game after a one-sided beating of Antonio Margarito moments ago at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Referee Raul Caiz stopped the bout in the 8th round.
According to Thailand-based Perry McNeely, who was monitoring the fight live, Mosley got off to a strong start, and after an even second round, exploded again in the third.
"They were fighting non-stop!" exclaimed McNeely, who used to managed fighters in Cebu.
Mosley's right hand proved to be the main weapon, as he cruised to an easy fourth round that had Margarito hurt. The fifth round looked close, but Mosley could still have won that one.
Mosley continued his assault in the sixth, prompting McNeely to comment that the Mosley of old appeared tonight.
Margarito was knocked down in the seventh, but was saved by the bell to survive the round.
The fight was finally stopped early in the eighth, as referee Caiz deemed the fight too one-sided.
"Mosley could have killed him," addded McNeely, pointing out that he can see a Pacman versus Mosley to be the next big fight.
Cebu City councilor Jack Jakosalem, who was waiting for the Philippine television to air the fight, expressed surprise at the result, although he said that this writer's earlier prediction of Mosley winning against Margarito went against all odds, but proved right.
"But Pacquiao has to train real hard for Hatton. Hatton is like a bigger and stronger Juan Manuel Marquez. Very dangerous for Pacman," Jakosalem pointed out.
More to come...
