THAILAND?S KAOVICHIT WINS WBA FLYWEIGHT TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 01 Jan 2009 Thailand?s 32 year old Denkaosan Kaovichit has won the WBA flyweight title with a stunning 2nd round knockout over Japan?s Takefumi Sakata in Hiroshima. The end came at 2:55 of round two when referee Roberto Ramirez counted out the 28 year old Sakata who was defending his title in a rematch with Kaovichit after they fought to a draw on November 4, 2007. In that defense of the title he won with a 3rd round TKO over champion Lorenzo Parra who lost the crown when he failed to make the weight, judge Gustavo Padilla scored the fight a 113-113 draw, Mikael Hook had Sakata the winner 114-112 while Francisco Martinez saw Kaovichit the winner 115-112. The Thai was denied at least a split decision victory when American referee Mark Nelson slapped Kaovichit with a one point deduction for holding which effectively decided the outcome in a close and interesting title fight. In fact the WBA ordered a rematch because of this and because the organization felt the Thai deserved a rematch in which he clearly showed his superiority by scoring a sensational second round knockout. Sakata had repeatedly ignored attempts by the handlers of IBF/IBO champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire to arrange a unification bout. With the win Kaovichit, who was ranked No. 1 in the last ratings improved to 46-1-1 with 20 knockouts. In his last fight against Filipino Dennis Juntillano on October 17 the Thai won by a 2nd round knockout while earlier on March 3, 2008 Kaovichit scored a 3rd round knockout over Rey Orais. With the loss Sakata dropped to 33-5-2 with 15 knockouts. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
