TALAPE ASKED TO DEFEND RP 122 LB. TITLE VS. BELANDRES PhilBoxing.com Fri, 26 Dec 2008 Philippine junior featherweight champion Jun Talape has been asked to make a mandatory defense of his national title against No. 1 contender Reynaldo Belandres of North Cotabato on Feb. 21 in Mandaue City. In an official communication addressed to Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Eric Buhain and Boxing Division Chief Dr. Nasser Cruz, North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Pinol, Belandres' manager, asked the GAB to order Talape to make the mandatory defense against the No. 1 challenger. Talape, who holds a record of 17 wins, 6 losses and 1 draw with 7 KOs, is scheduled to defend his title not later than February of 2009. A verbal offer made by Vice Gov. Pinol in October relayed through Dr. Cruz has not been acknowledged by Talape and his manager, Jay San Pedro. Vice Gov. said this prompted him to write the GAB officially so that sanctions could be imposed against Talape should he refuse to defend his title by February. The 23-year-old Belandres, a former member of the Philippine amateur boxing team, holds a record of 11 wins and 1 draw with 7 KOs. The proposed Talape-Belandres Philippine championship fight is one of the many bouts being lined up for a big boxing event set Feb. 21 at the fully air-conditioned Mandaue Sports Center in Mandaue City. The card, dubbed "The Mindanao Invasion" will feature top fighters from the big Southern Island, including upcoming bantamweights Rolando Magbanua of Pigcawayan, North Cotabato and Jundy Maraon of Suminot, Zamboanga del Sur who will both fight for WBO titles. Maraon, 23, currently rated No. 6 bantamweight in the Philippines and currently based in Salinas, California will challenge WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion Jason Egera in 12 rounds. Maraon has a record of 11 wins 1 draw with 9 KOs. Magbanua, also 23, will fight former world bantamweight champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin in 12 rounds for the vacant WBO Oriental bantamweight title. Magbanua has a record of 13 wins with 8 KOs. |
