SHAW SAYS THE'S WAITING FOR TOP RANK ON DARCHINYAN VS ARCE DEAL By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 26 Nov 2008 Promoter Gary Shaw who handles WBC/WBA and IBF super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan says that contrary to a report in the Sunday Telegraph of Australia, there?s no done deal for a title fight between the devastating southpaw puncher and Mexican warrior Jorge ?Travieso? Arce because he's waiting for Top Rank who handle Arce. In an overseas telephone conversation with www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports, Shaw said he?s been ?waiting a week for Top Rank? to get a deal finalized. He said the Sunday Telegraph story was correct on the February 7 date but added ?I don?t know the site yet? although he made it clear ?my deal is done with Showtime but I?m waiting on Top Rank. I don?t know what the holdup is.? When we mentioned that perhaps the reason was because Top Rank and promoter Bob Arum were so involved in the promotions for the December 6 ?Dream Match? between Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya, Shaw replied, ?No, no. When you represent an athlete you owe it to the athlete to make the deals so they can go into training and they know what they?re doing.? Shaw said Darchinyan would like to fight Arce, adding that ?I have (Z ?The Dream?) Gorres on my hit list, I had Gerry Penalosa.? He explained that he had Penalosa on his hit list ?but he?s down the line if we can?t do any fights at 115. Then we?ll go to 118 and fight Gerry? the current WBO bantamweight champion. Expressing his confidence in Darchinyan, Shaw said ?I think he can beat any of them and I think he can fight up to a 122 pounds. He?s got a very hard punch.? In the meantime Arum told us that with a Darchinyan-Arce fight in the works he was looking at having IBF/IBO flyweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire move up to 115 pounds and fight reigning WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel in Manila. Arum said he was looking at a title fight in the first quarter of next year and had been talking to Solar Sports CEO Peter Chanliong about a partnership in staging the fight.
