Tell your boxer all the ring rules By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Wed, 19 Nov 2008 The expected exciting fight at the Elorde Sports Center in Para?aque City, Philippines, last Saturday, 15 November 2008, abruptly ended midway in the 2nd round when the fighter who accidentally fell outside of the ring did not know what to do next. Non-stop puncher boxer Jonathan Tacuning was fighting Esmalben Bujas at 112 lbs in what was listed as the pre-main event 8-round fight though the many who knew Tacuning regard as the main event of the evening. While Tacuning displayed his rapid punching style in the 1st round, Bujas proved to be a tough opponent as he was also successful in landing his own powershots to the body which at times caused Tacuning to step back and miss. Tacuning gave his all in the 2nd round raining Bujas with punches from all angles. As Bujas tried to evade the punches, he slipped to the floor near the ropes of a neutral corner. Tacuning continued his attack and as Bujas tried to further avoid getting hit, Bujas fell out of the ring and onto the floor just about two feet below. Bujas was not hurt as he immediately stood up. But instead of going back inside the ring, Bujas remained standing and raised his protest to the referee on his perceived reason of his fall. The referee who knew the rules made his count and declared Bujas out to the dismay of the crowd while Bujas did not even attempt to get inside the ring. Tacuning deserved his win and he is ready for the bigger fights. But by his ignorance of the rule that when a fighter is thrown out of the ring he must return inside the ring within 20 seconds unassisted, Bujas unnecessarily blemished his ring record with a TKO loss. If he was not informed of the rule, Bujas? manager and trainer should share in the blame. For the sad incident not to get duplicated in any other ring, managers and trainers should not only train their fighters how to fight, they should teach them all the applicable rules in a fight. While incidents such as this seldom happen, the rule for the boxer to immediately get inside the ring unassisted within 20 seconds when knocked out of it should not be overlooked. Other results: Monico Laurente won by unanimous decision over Jun Eraham, 120 lbs, 10-round fight Joram Ballar won split decision over Jun Piacidad, 119 lbs, 8-round fight Jomar Elorde won by unanimous decision over Roque Lauro, 105 lbs, 6-round fight Juan Manuel Elorde won by unanimous decision over Cris Goles, 119 lbs, 4-round fight Glen Sumingit won by TKO in the 3rd round over Jaypee Alipio, 115 lbs, 4-round fight The 4-round 106-lb fight between Rodel Gevero and Martin Brenchis fight ended in a split draw.
