NIETES GETS TWO TITLE DEFENSE OFFERS

PhilBoxing.com

WBO minimum weight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes won?t have to wait too long to defend his title since internationally prominent matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz has called young Michael Aldeguer of the ALA Gym with two offers.

Aldeguer told www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that the first offer is to defend his title against Mexico?s Eric Ramirez (25-5-1, 19 KO?s), who is the WBO Latino champion in Mexico on February 2, 2009.

The second offer is from light flyweight champion, undefeated Ivan ?El Nino? Calderon (32-0, 6 KO?s) of Puerto Rico who wants to move down to minimum weight to fight Nietes for his title in Puerto Rico sometime in Many next year.

Aldeguer and his respected father, boxing patron Tony Aldeguer said they are studying both proposals after receiving an overseas telephone call from Lewkowicz who had just attended the WBO Convention in Florida.

Nietes who has a record of 231-3 with 14 knockouts scored a smashing 2nd round knockout over world-rated Eddy Castro in Cebu last August 30 in his first title defense after winning the vacant crown by a twelfth round unanimous decision over Thailand?s Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym on July 7, 2007.

Both Nietes and Ramirez are 26 years old and both are orthodox fighters although the Mexican at 5?5? enjoys a two inch height advantage over Nietes who is an excellent technician and packs power in both hands.

Ramirez has kept busy fighting four times this year and winning all four bouts against opposition that was not really formidable judging by the records on boxrec which could be inaccurate at times.

Calderon would be the more attractive and certainly more difficult fight since the 33 year old light flyweight champion is an excellent boxer although he lacks power as evidenced by his record of only 5 knockouts in 32 wins.

Calderon won both his title defenses this year. He scored a shutout over South Africa ?s Nelson Dieppa on April 5 and then won by a 7th round technical decision in a fairly close fight against Hugo Fidel Cazares.

Referee Luis Pabon was asked to stop the fight by the ringside physician after Calderon suffered a severely lacerated forehead following an accidental head-butt. The time was 1:58 of round seven.
