BOXING PRESIDENTS CONTINUE IN OFFICE
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 12 Nov 2008
  Sulaiman (L) and Valcarcel.
One week after Don Jose Sulaiman was unanimously chosen to continue as president of the World Boxing Council at its 46th Annual Convention in Chengdu, China, another boxing leader has been re-elected as president of the World Boxing Organization at its convention in Florida.
Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel was re-elected president of the WBO by a unanimous vote at the WBO Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
While Sulaiman has already served as WBC president for 33 years, Valcarcel has been president for 13 years having been elected for the first time in 1995.
Both Sulaiman and Valcarcel were elected to a new four-year term.
Valcarcel who was in Cebu last year for the WBO super flyweight championship in which Fernando Montiel retained his title in a hugely controversial twelve round decision over Z ?The Dream? Gorres said after his re-election ?the sky?s the limit? and promised that the WBO is going to ?try even harder.?
The current president of the World Boxing Association is Dr. Gilberto Mendoza who was elected in October 1982 has been in office for 26 years.
The only woman to head a world boxing organization is Mariam Muhammad who first served as executive director, then executive director and treasurer and finally assumed office as president of the International Boxing Federation in October 2001.
The WBO has clearly made impressive gains especially in countries like the Philippines, Thailand and to a lesser extent Indonesia while also making inroads into China and Australia.
Success has come largely through the untiring efforts of WBO?s vice president for the Asia-Pacific region Leon Panoncillo who began the Oriental Championships which have quickly grown and made a name for itself by providing an opportunity for young, promising fighters to move up into the limelight and the rankings of the WBO.
