SUPPORT SNOWBALLS FOR DONAIRE SR: "SON NEEDS A MICHELLE OBAMA-TYPE WIFE"
PhilBoxing.com Tue, 11 Nov 2008
Following the column penned by the well-respected North Cotabato vice governor Manny Pinol, support is building up on the cause of trainer Nonito Donaire Sr. who is most likely going to split with his world champion son Nonito Jr due to what reports say as the unnecessary interference of wife Rachelle in the boxer's affairs.
"You can always find another wife, they come and go, but you can never replace your father," says a source who added that the father-trainer has always looked upon the benefit of his son both in and out of the ring.
International boxing judge Edward Ligas, sought for comment on the column penned by Pinol, indicated that Donaire Jr "needs a Michelle Obama-type wife who is decent, educated, and keeps herself on the sidelines."
At the same time, Ligas said that Donaire Jr. needs a support system that can make sure in all future fights, the fighter will bring with him the Philippine flag to the ring, indicating that for the first time, there was no flag in Donaire's corner for the Mthalane fight.
"Filipinos were very disappointed, i know that because i was in Cebu when the fight happened. Several comments i heard were asking about Donaire's sense of patriotism, compared to Mthalane who brought a small flag of South Africa," Ligas added.
Another source, who is based in Las Vegas, also suggested that Donaire's wife should not have been with him the entire duration of training.
"Sex is bad for an athlete, especially before a fight. Look at Joe Calzaghe, he made sure his girlfriend was not around during training. Look at Manny Pacquiao, he makes sure Jinkee doesn't interfere," the source said.
