JULIUS IRVING III WINS BY KO IN ROUND ONE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 10 Nov 2008 With his legendary NBA Hall-of-Fame father Julius ?Dr. J? Erving watching at ringside, Julius Irving III virtually scored on a slam dunk for which is father was famous on the basketball court, in the boxing ring. Making his professional debut Erving III scored what was described as ?an electrifying first round KO? of Kantrell Cameron who was also making his first appearance in the ring as a pro at the Adamsville Recreation Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Boxrec.com said it was a heavyweight bout. In a ferocious opening round both boxers came charging in a fight that quickly turned into a slugfest. But Erving?s superior skills and precise punching made the difference. With some ten seconds remaining in the opening round Erving let loose with a flurry of unanswered punches highlighted by a vicious right that dropped Cameron. Referee George Chip immediately called a halt with the official time 2:59 of round one. In a pre-fight feature story, writer Dave ?Large? Larzelere said ?the good doctor?s son to this point in his life has delienated himself from his father?s legend by charting his own path as a music mogul, founding the Erving/Wonder Management Group that represents such acts as the Grammy-nominated Floetry, Angie Stone, Journalist and Freeway.? However, Larzelere said the 34 year old Julius III is ?looking to make his own way as an athlete by stepping into the boxing ring.? He is trained by former cruiserweight contender Yahya McClain and made his debut in a gala event although his age is considered too late to start a legitimate pro career. The belief is that Erving III?s fight was a ?one-shot kind of deal for promotional purposes.? However it was pointed out that given the man?s prodigious genetic inheritance, maybe Julius III will turn out to be a serious contender. Larzelere said people should not forget that another Erving product, Dr. J?s daughter Alexandra Stevenson made it all the way to the women?s singles semi finals at Wimbledon in 1999.
