Laput and Whittaker Impress Digos Crowd!

PhilBoxing.com

Ramie Laput took the long route while Charles Whittaker made a detour, but both ended up at the same place--victory lane.

Laput the WBO #15 rated Jr Featherweight in the world, beat veteran Phil Angcanmor over 10 brutal rounds last night in front of a capacity crowd in Digos City's Pearl Center.

Laput, the current WBO Asia Pacific Jr Featherweight Champ and currently the #15 world ranked Jr Featherwight is managed by the American Boxing Academy's owner Ken Smith and trained by American trainer "Storman" Norman Wilson.

Laput started in his typical fashion dominating the action with fast accurate jabs, followed by combination after combination to the charging Angcamor. The middle rounds had more of the same with Laput methodically taking apart the veteran challenger from Cagayan De Oro.. The 7th round was the toughest round for Angcamor as Laput showed his desire to try to end things now. Laput tirelessly pursued his beaten opponent raining punches to the head and body almost prompting the referee to stop the bout. The following three rounds had Laput cruising to victory as the tough Angcamor held on to survive the fight. Laput raised his record to 34 wins against only 3 losses with 18Kos. The bout was the first fight of the Co-main event promoted by American Boxing Academy of Digos City.

In the co-main event, visiting WBO no. 7 world rated Jr Middleweight Charles Whittaker made short work of trialhorse Jury Noda of Manila.

In the 2nd round, Whittaker droppped his helpless opponent with a crushing left hook, prompting his corner to call it a night for him. The jam packed fight card was the 10th event promoted or co-promoted by American Boxing Academy owner Ken Smith this year in the Philippines..{ABAs final promotion of the year will be Dec 20th in Digos City}

Matchmaker Glenn Salazar's competitive and evenly matched undercard made for an exciting night with most of the fights going the distance, and all action-packed. In perhaps the most entertaining fight of the evening ABA upstart Roberto Udtuhan raised his record to 5-0 4kos against veteran journeyman Jerry Manganip of Butuaan. Udtuhan started fast as he usually had in running his record to 4 straight KOs. Udtuhan floored his opponent in the opening round and again in round 2. However, by the midddle of round four both fighters were slugging it out in the center of the ring. Rounds 5 and 6 saw Udtuhan take over beating his opponent from pillar to post prompting the referee to take a long look at the beaten Manganip after round five before letting the fight continue. Round six saw Udtuhan pummeling his game opponent with the hometown crowd standing and cheering him on to the final bell before winning on a unanimous decision...In another 6 round slugfest ABAs Cerillo "bodysnatcher" Espino [7wins 2 loss] scored a UD 6rounds over tough Romnick Rapista of Cagayan De Oro. The fight saw some of the best back and forth action of the night with both fighters trading furious exchanges.. Round 3 saw Rapista drop Espino with a solid hook to the jaw, putting the Digos fighter on the seat of his pants for the count of 5. When Espino got to his feet Rapista went right on the attack forcing a slugout until the bell sounded the end of the round with the crowd voicing its approval.. The next two rounds had Cerilo Espino regaining control and coasting to a close yet unanimous 6round decision.

In a scary situation ABA fighter Jan Jan Claveria scored a 5 round TKO over Nino Tubigon... After the fight was stopped in round five with Claveria on the attack, Tubigon complained of disiness and vomitted. ABA staff immediatley transported Tubigon to Digos City hospital where he was treated for exhaustion and released in good health a few hours later.

Two boxers from the improving stable of Mayor JoJo Lopez of Maasim got well deserved victories in their respective bouts..JB Nacionales was impressive with a 4th round KO over Winnie Bartequiel. Nacionales showed his skill and power, and has improved since his last appearance on American Boxing Promotions in Sept 2008. Mayor Lopez was given a scare when his hot prospect Alvin Bias suffered a surprise knock down to get up and outpoint Arwin Ada. Earlier in the evening American Boxing Academy 19 year old prospect Joebert De los Reyes ran his record to 2-0 with a hard fought UD4 over a very determined opponent from Cagayan De Oro City.
