LETTER TO THE EDITOR: RESPONSE TO 'PACQUIAO WATCH: MARQUEZ WON, SO WHAT?' PhilBoxing.com Sat, 20 Sep 2008 I?m, writing this letter in response to Mr. Edwin G. Espejo?s article- ?PACQUIAO WATCH: MARQUEZ WON SO WHAT? And because I?m deeply a fan of boxing since I can remember. In response to Mr. Espejo saying ?who cares if Marquez won, well I have to strongly disagree with that comment. Every featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight should worry about Marquez?s profound victory over Casamayor, and becoming champion at that weight-class. I want to add that I?m not Mexican, but I respect all boxers not matter of race, ethnicity etc. I?m especially a fan of Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Filipino fighters for their strong-heart combat always going forward and providing us with always an entertaining boxing fight for the boxing community. Now back to the topic of my letter, I?m a fan of Manny Pacquiao; because of the way he fights his offensive onslaught is always devastating to his opponents. However in my very personal opinion (and I consider myself somewhat of a boxing expert) when Marquez first fought Pacquiao the fight was declared a draw, and I have to agree with that decision, even with the controversy that one of the judges didn?t score the 1st round correctly. Both fighters showed their incredible boxing skills, Manny in the first and second round especially, and Marquez in many if not ?most? the round afterwards, hence the draw, it was a fantastic fight, and I agreed with the decision. Mr. Espejo you said Marquez declined the immediate rematch against Pacquiao after their first fight, but you said it yourself, it was due to a disagreement over the purse. How can you blame Marquez for not accepting the fight if the money wasn?t right for him, I?m sure you know that boxing is not only a sport, but its also a business, and boxers are not only boxers they are businessman along with their managers. Boxing equals business whether anyone likes it or not. If Marquez wasn?t comfortable with the purse maybe or maybe not he was right in declining the fight. If you?re a boxer, you don?t want to get beat up for a pittance when you can get beat up or beat the other guy up for a lot more. When Marquez fought Pacquiao the second time, Pacquiao knocked down Marquez once and almost knocked him again, but in this fight I truly believe (and this is from a very neutral point of view and I hope you believe me) Marquez should?ve got the decision, he dominated the fight mostly, and boxed beautifully against Manny. But Manny won and you know that?s ok, because I like Manny, but after seeing Marquez beat Casamayor by Knock-Out I think he does deserve a third shot at Manny, and like you said it may not happen soon, but I hope it does happen before Marquez gets too old. Is Manny p4p king, maybe he is maybe he is not, as much as I HATE!!!!!!!!!! Floyd Mayweather because he talks a lot and shows off too much, he is still undefeated, even with all the controversy surround him, and in the eyes of many he remains p4p king even though he RECENTLY RETIRED. Is Manny a legendary fighter now? With all due respect, not yet, yes he defeated many of the best Mexican fighters and others as well, but how many fights has he had in the U.S. he needs to fight more, I have NO PROBLEM calling Manny Pacquiao p4p king or a legend, but he still needs to fight more fights to do so, especially if he wants to be a true legend of the sport. Whether Pacquiao beats De La Hoya or don?t I still want a Pacquiao Marquez 3: who would win the third fight? I honestly don?t know, but hell I bet you this, it would be an exciting and remarkable fight for us boxing fans. Sincerely, Jr. Junior Garcia soych1va@yahoo.com ![]() |
