BREAKING NEWS: GOLDEN BOY PITS GORRES AGAINST LOPEZ ON HATTON-MALIGNAGGI CARD

Golden Boy Promotions vice president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez called www.insidesports.ph from Mexico on Friday morning to confirm that Z ?The Dream? Gorres will fight Puerto Rico?s Jose ?Carita? Lopez for the WBO Interim Championship on the big Ricky ?Hitman? Hatton-Paul Malignaggi fight card on November 22 over HBO.

Gorres (28-2-2, 15 KO?s) is currently ranked No.2 while Lopez is No. 3 with Thailand?s 39 year old Pramuansak Posuwan No.1 . Fernando Montiel is the champion who reportedly plans on moving up to bantamweight.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum earlier Friday said they had been discussing an offer for Gorres to fight Montiel in a title rematch in Macau on December 13. Gorres lost a hugely controversial split decision to Montiel in ?The Moment of Truth? fight card staged in Cebu in February last year.

Arum told www.insidesports.ph on Thursday that Montiel had agreed on the terms and all he needed was for us to have the handlers of Gorres, the father-and-son duo of Tony and Michael Aldeguer, get in touch with Arum so they could finalize details.

However, Gomez clarified the situation by saying Bruce Trampler of Top Rank had merely verified from him whether Gorres was under Golden Boy and nothing else. Gomez said ?there was no offer, nothing.?

The Golden Boy Promotions top executive said the Gorres-Lopez fight would be on HBO?s regular international feed although it won?t be a pay-per-view card.

Lopez has good style and can punch and has a record of 37-7-2 with 31 knockouts. His only disadvantage may be that he is 36 years old but he showed his class and punching power when he forced Mexican journeyman Oscar Andrade to retire in the seventh round last August 8 in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico.

Respected boxing writer Jake Donovan of Maxboxing reported that the fight ?had its moments of competitive action? which included a ?spirited two-way exchange in the third round. Both fighters enjoyed success downstairs though Lopez would experience the best and worst moments of the fight with his body attack.?

Donovan said Lopez scored what appeared to be the first knockdown of the bout in the 5th round ?only for it to be waved off and ruled a low blow. The shot appeared to be on the beltline but Andrade was able to sell the referee on a phantom punch.?

The report said that Andrade had no such luck at the start of the 6th round when he held his groin area after ?crumbling to the canvas from a body shot only to receive an eight-count. Andrade appeared to give up at the start of the 7th round reportedly collapsing in the corner after absorbing a shot on the thigh and another on the beltline, this time resulting in a point deduction for Lopez.

It was the last break for Andrade who was dropped twice more in the round from solid body shots by Lopez which the Mexican tried to claim were low blows. The bout?s final knockdown sent Andrade tumbling backwards. The Mexican rose in disbelief that the referee was counting instead of calling a time out.

At the end of the round Andrade?s corner realized that he didn?t want anymore and signaled the referee to end it all.

Andrade lost by a twelve round unanimous decision to Gerry Penalosa in a NABF super flyweight title fight on May 24, 2002 and also dropped a twelve round decision to Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire in an NABF flyweight title bout on October 7, 2006.

Jose 'Carita' Lopez (R) tags Juan Mercedes with lead right.

Lopez scored an impressive 4th round TKO win over Juan Mercedes (20-1-14 KO?s) in a WBO Latinto title fight last April 5. He had also scored a twelve round majority decision over Juan Alberto Rosas to win the WBC Latino and WBA Fedecentro flyweight titles on December 16, 2006.

Lopez also lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Fernando Montiel in a fight where he decked Montiel in the 9th round on September 8, 2001.
