SULAIMAN SAYS SONNY BOY JARO IS DANGEROUS
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 10 Sep 2008
World Boxing Council secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman says that Filipino light flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro who gets a shot at the title held by Edgar Sosa is a dangerous opponent.
The title fight is scheduled to take place in Mexico City on September 27.
In an email to www.insidesports.ph, Manila Standard and Viva Sports, the son of WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman warned Sosa about the danger of facing Sonny Boy Jaro while explaining why veteran Juanito Rubillar who won a title eliminator against former champion Omar Nino Romero didn?t get the title shot.
Sulaiman explained that Sosa was ?allowed an optional defense before the mandatory. That is why he will fight Jaro which I think is a very dangerous match for Sosa.?
The WBC secretary general said Rubillar will be given a mandatory title shot at the winner of the Sosa- Sonny Boy Jaro title fight.
Sonny Boy Jaro who is 26 years old won the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation title by split decision over Along Denoy last June 20. In his previous bout which was a defense of his Philippine title, Jaro scored a fourth round TKO over Julius Alcos on February 29.
Sonny Boy Jaro is from the stable of former boxer and now manager and trainer Aljoe Jaro but the light flyweight contender merely adopted the name and is not related to his manager.
The 29 year old Sosa has had five successful defenses since winning the title via a majority decision over Brian Viloria on April 14, 2007 in San Antonio, Texas. His last defense was against Japan?s Akashi Kunishige over whom he scored an eighth round TKO on June 14 this year.
Sosa has a record of 32-5 with 17 knockouts while Jaro?s record is 28-6-5 with 17 knockouts.
Southpaw Rubillar who earned the mandatory title shot with a split decision win over former champion Omar Nino Romero last June 14 has a record of 46-10-7 with 22 knockouts.
