RUDY SALUD WELCOMES DE LA HOYA FIGHT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 28 Aug 2008 World Boxing Council founding secretary general, lawyer Rudy Salud, welcomed the news that Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao will face ?The Golden Boy? Oscar De La Hoya in Las Vegas on December 6. When www.insidesports.ph broke the news to Salud his immediate response was ?very, good very good.? Asked to elaborate the widely respected lawyer-sportsman said ?I personally believe Pacquiao can beat him. Not necessarily because of the superior skills of Pacquiao but the receding talent of the Golden Boy.? Salud recalled it was the same with the late world junior lightweight champion Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde saying ?he was there but couldn?t throw punches. It was the same with Roy Jones Jr against AntonioTarver. He couldn?t throw his punches anymore.? Salud said he believes ?something happens to the body that after a while the reflexes slow down and what a fighter used to do can no longer be done. But no fighters ever realize that, until its over.? He said Elorde didn?t like the retirement, Jones keeps coming back and now with Pacquiao turning 30 in December it will be ?just right and he will be at his prime while after another year he will also start going down.? Salud reiterated what he told www.insidesports.ph before which was that De La Hoya and Pacquiao had ?no place to go except against each other.? De La Hoya has Antonio Margarito whom he will not fight and Salud added ?Pacquiao will need to fight three or four times to get what he will earn against De La Hoya. it?s a no-brainer.? Pacquiao?s lawyer Franklin ?Jeng? Gacal informed us that Team Pacquiao would issue a formal statement later while both Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who is in Ohio promoting the Kelly Pavlik - Bernard Hopkins fight and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer are scheduled to make a formal announcement on Thursday (Friday, Manila Time). Canadian Michael Koncz who is close to Arum and also serves as an adviser to Pacquiao arrived in Pacquiao's hometown of General Santos Thursday morning further strengthening the belief that the fight is a done deal. Gacal indicated that they were waiting for word on the revenue split which Roach had earlier informed www.insidesports.ph would wind up at a compromise 65-35. De La Hoya had originally refused to budge from his proposal of a 70-30 cut while Pacquiao stood firm on his 60-40 counter-proposal. It seems that eventually both fighters conceded five percent on either side. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
