WBO NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS UNDERCARD: MILERS' GAMES PhilBoxing.com Mon, 25 Aug 2008 If sustaining steam in a full-rounded fight cannot be over-emphasized, the rising ALA Gym Boys fighting in the undercard of this August-end's WBO Night of Champions wind-buster would face a rough test on their staying power in an expectedly long brawl that could well end in the final rounds. World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific Youth lightweight champion Jason Pagara, super bantamweight Jomanz Omanz, bantamweight Ray Las Pi?as, light flyweight Jercion Mancio are in for breath-catching rounds as they are pitted against warriors who lived the fighting ropes in high winds. The first ALA Gym pugilist to engage his foe will be Jerson Mancio of Esperanza, Agusan del Sur. Mancio hit professional boxing with a superior performance in the 2007 television series, Idol: Search for the Next Pinoy Boxing Star. He overcame rival Saddam Barambangan, also in his pro boxing debut, and became the Junior flyweight Idol champion. A full-rounder himself, Mancio will face Elorde stable fighter Mario Sison, who debut nine months earlier. Ray Las Pi?as, another ALA Gym fighter, will square it off with a miler and a better puncher based on their fight histories. Las Pi?as (4-1-1) brought only five fights into the end rounds and displayed only some 16 percent KO performance as opposed to Gedion Amba of Lapu-lapu City who paraded a 30%-KO report card and seven fights carried to the final rounds. The odd would be so much against Jomanz Omanz in his encounter with Roger Galicia of the Tiger City Stable of Mandaluyong. Based on the length of the career alone, this fight would be a contest between a young sturdy warrior and a veteran gladiator who was no stranger to ruling a weight division, and did it twice. Galicia (35 career fights in 10 years) ruled the Philippine super flyweight division since his defeat of Eric Barcelona in 2002, and remained undefeated until his climb to the bantamweight level in 2006. He also held the World Boxing Council International bantamweight title in 2003 until he went up to super bantamweight in 2005. Omanz's edge (despite a 2-year pro boxing log) will be in his stopping power, which brought to canvas half of the foes he defeated. Galicia however will be pushing him perhaps without losing a breath on account of his 24 fights all brought to the end-rounds. The main card will be opened by a face off between Pagara and 14-years-older Thai prizefighter Kongdej Sithtrajtrakan in eight non-title rounds. So much like the Omanz-Galicia contest, it will be a war between the young (this time a regional champion) and the veteran. Sithtrajtrakan has logged 32 fights in his career (against Pagara's 15 fights). Both have brought half of their fights to the end rounds. Again, what Pagara holds that could help him even the odds against him will be his punching prowess that has stopped more than half of his defeated opponents. The undercard promises long-ending knuckled feuds, a welcome adrenaline pumper for the super-exciting main events with defending champions Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista and Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes in the super-bantam and mini-fly divisions, respectively. The gates open at 5:00 PM for early comers at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel & Casino in a back-to-back promotion is presented by ALA Promotions in cooperation with Cebu City Waterfront Hotel & Casino and ABS-CBN Sports. |
