EDDY CASTRO: ON BRAWLING DISTANCE TO THE WORLD CROWN PhilBoxing.com Tue, 19 Aug 2008 World-rated warrior Eddy ?Torito II? Castro delivers great promise on account alone of the boxing-rich atmosphere he breath. Boxing is the most popular sport in Nicaragua after baseball. Among people who loved the sports so much, the hungry to win a world crown would remain painful until fulfilled. Nicaragua has also churned out many world champions including such familiar names as three-time world champions Alexis ?The Explosive Thin Man? Arguello and Ricardo ?El Matador? Mayorga. Arguello held the WBA featherweight crown in 1974 and vacated it in 1977 when he fought Alfredo Escalera for the WBC super featherweight title, won, and became the WBA super champion in featherweight division. After two years, he went up to depose Jim Watt from the WBC lightweight throne. He vacated it in 1983. Mayorga turned WBA super champ in the welterweight division when he defeated WBC ruler Vernon Forrest in 2003. He became the WBC super welterweight king in 2005. Unlike Arguello and Mayorga who lost in their debut fights by technical KO, Castro punished his fellow starters by TKO in the 3rd round. The WBO No. 9-ranked pugilist also ranked # 6 in WBA FEDECARIBE and # 7 in WBC FECARBOX. And now he got the break for a world boxing title now held by WBO mini-flyweight king Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes. Nietes took the vacant world title on Sept 30, 2007 when he defeated contender Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym (now WBO No. 8) of Thailand. Since then the search for a qualified challenger proved elusive. The scheduled defense against WBO No. 1 challenger Daniel Reyes fell off on promotional issues in April. Negotiations with No. 3-ranked contender Erik Ramirez got sniffed off for the July 5 slot. With the higher-ranked contenders unavailable due to recent fights, Castro emerged as the most qualified fighter to bid for the world crown. The August-30 fistic festival is presented by ALA Promotions in cooperation with Cebu City Waterfront Hotel & Casino and ABS-CBN Sports. Major sponsors include Lai Garden Restaurant SM City where the recent press conference was held, Visayan Electric Company, KIA Motors, Hola Espa?a, Chika-an sa Cebu, SM City Cebu, Gaisano Grand, La Tegola Cucina Italiana, Sun.Star Daily, The Freeman, Cebu Daily News, Y101 Always First, Sunriser Motorcycles, and Media Images & Production Concepts.
