ARUM MEETS WITH SCHAEFER ON WEDNESDAY By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 04 Aug 2008 Top Rank promoter Bob Arum meets with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon to move forward negotiations on the much-talked-about fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao on December 6 in Las Vegas. Arum spoke briefly with www.insidesports.ph from the Asian gambling capital of Macau where he and his wife are attending the 75th birthday celebration of the owner of the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino, Sheldon Adelson. Arum said he had met with Pacquiao in Las Vegas and ?got directions? from Pacquiao but didn?t wish to reveal any details. Pacquiao's business manager Eric Pineda who accompanied him to Las Vegas along with Pacquiao's lawyer Franklin "Jeng" Gacal and adviser Michael Koncz said they had presented a counter-proposal to Arum for transmittal to Schaefer at their scheduled meeting in LA. Pineda who returned to Los Angeles from Las Vegas along with Pacquiao and his family told www.insidesports.ph that the talks were ?still on-going.? He said Pacquiao's camp had submitted a counter-proposal to the blueprint from Golden Boy Promotions which Schaefer had submitted to Arum prior to leaving on an European vacation from which he returned last July 30. Pineda said ?we came out with what we want? which basically meant ?just a matter of getting some of the numbers right.? He stressed that there was ?not really? any major issues that need to be overcome and that ?as far as we are concerned chances of the fight happening are around seventy percent.? Meantime Pacquiao, in his regular column carried by philboxing.com clarified that his fight with De La Hoya will be "for all of boxing and for all the people who love the sport." Responding to an earlier statement by De La Hoya in an exclusive interview with www.insidesports.ph that it was "personal" Pacquiao stressed that it was "also something personal because we have other things to settle with the Golden Boy." Pacquiao did not specify but said "I know there are so many other things that need to get settled if and when our fight pushes through. What better way to do it than finish things on top of the ring." Pacquiao said he was confident that Arum and Schaefer would agree to the conditions he had asked for because they were all proper. He added, "our fight with De La Hoya is more than personal to me, than it is for the money. It is for the honor of my family and my country. I am putting my honor at stake because of principles that guided my career ever since I started boxing." Pineda said he will return to Manila on Tuesday to finalize the travel arrangements for Pacquiao?s trip to Beijing where he will be the Philippines flag-bearer in the colorful Olympic Games opening ceremony on August 8. Pacquiao, his charming wife Jinkee and their three kids are scheduled to arrive in Manila on Wednesday. Pineda said Pacquiao and his family were having a wonderful time together ?without too many people around him? and that they were returning to Pacquiao?s apartment after going to the Mall. Pineda said Pacquiao was clearly enjoying ?the rare moments being himself? as a husband and father. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
