DOMINGO SHOOTS FOR WBO ORIENTAL TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

The professional career of Michael Domingo is an epitome of a warrior?s spirit pushing on with a quest for the ultimate world championship crown against all odds and amidst all personal limitations of a too-human prizefighter.

Domingo is a veteran of nine years in pro boxing by November. He started his career in a not-so-dramatic win over 10-fight-logger Juan Dindovja in 1999 by point win. He logged an active presence with an average of four fights every year with busiest years in 2000 and 2003 with eight fights each.

A native of Libac, Sultan Kudarat, a southern province of the Philippines somewhere in the island of Mindanao, Domingo has been familiar with the excruciating pain of losing title fights almost in a row, even twice in certain years. His first foray to the championship world brought him an 8-round KO against Thai Sod Looknongyangtoy in Oct 2001 during his bid for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific super bantamweight crown. Barely two months later, he lost by a 3rd round KO against another Thai Somsak Sithchatchawal for the Pan Asian Boxing Association (PABA) super bantamweight interim title.

In 2004, Domingo again faced the hard card dealt at him as he lost in his bid for the International Boxing Federation Pan Pacific bantamweight title to another Thai Teerapong Distar by UD. His second attempt for a PABA crown, this time in the bantamweight class, brought him the same loss. And in 2006, he lost to French Frederic Patrac the vacant title for the World Boxing Federation bantamweight championship. Only a heart of stone and a sharp determination to get what he wants can stand such devastating blows of fortune.

But there is one thing that is specially notable of Domingo. He ruled undefeated the Philippine bantamweight kingdom that he snatched from Joel Bauya on Oct 29, 2005 by a technical decision in round 9. He has been challenged for the title five times and prevailed. Such is the measure of this man.

The July-26 explosive extravanza dubbed ?Laban Na Banal? will see Domingo shooting his way towads his dream. This time he his gunning for his first regional title, the vacant WBO Oriental crown, opposed by the deadly Indonesian warrior, Indonesian Boxing Association (IBA) No. 2 super bantamweight titlist Rivo Rengkung. Rengkung dropped his opponents almost half of his 27 wins. He has also beaten fellow titlist, now IBA No. 4 Gun Tinular in 2002.

Domingo?s path would not be an easy one. But world boxing legends have gone through the same kind. And that?s what he should be thankful for. The boxing entertainment is brought forth by ALA Promotions, ABS-CBN Sports, and Golden Boy Promotions at the New Cebu Coliseum. Tickets are available now at Island Souvenirs, Bisaya, and USA Sports boutiques, ALA Gym Banilad Town Center, Pandelicious Punta, and Marfori Bakery.
